It could be really easy getting in over my head on these, trying to translate all the responses, and all the tweets Azuma is responding to. I think I'll just stick to his own tweets though.

Also, is it confusing when I post the most recent ones at the bottom, when his Twitter pages shows the most recent ones at the top?

When I said "Stupid" he said "What did you call me?"
Is this an echo?
about 16 hours ago via web

This is a reference to a Japanese poem by Misuzu Kaneko.
It goes like this:

When I say "Let's play"
It says "Let's play."

When I say "Stupid"
It says "Stupid."

When I say "I won't play with you any more"
It says "I won't play with you any more."

And then, later
When I get lonely

I say "I'm sorry"
And it says "I'm sorry."

Is this an echo?
No, it could be any of us.

During a major, heavily televised disaster, there is usually a huge surge of donations; and if those donations are earmarked for that disaster, specifically, there is often far more than can be effectively used in the relief of that disaster. This is why you should donate to a reputable organization and let them decide where to spend the money rather than tying it to a specific incident.

  No.214636   Report

It's not so much an "attitude" as it is people being afraid of things they don't understand.

"Human dock" is slang for going in for a thorough medical check-up (as in dry dock for a boat).
Azuma actually said "Human dog" though, but that makes no sense since it means exactly what it sounds like, and apparently it's a common miswriting of "Human dock", so I have to assume that's what he meant.

Either that, or he can't have breakfast because he's doing one of these videos.

@azumakiyohiko
@konsyoku Sorry for the late reply. Basically, if you can make it here (the Tokyo Metro area) it's all good. I've got assistants who stay here, and others who commute from home, but I think the biggest hurdle will be getting accepted.
8:16 PM May 31st via web

@konsyoku

10:56 PM Jul 27th via web

@masumi_asano
@azumakiyohiko What I mean by sushi is that it's basically made from just rice, fish, and soy sauce, right? If you were to compare it to something like French cooking, it's barely got the means to compete. But I think that more than any other style of cooking, it's a food where obvious differences come out in its flavor. Cont'd.
11:27 PM Jul 27th via TweetDeck

@masumi_asano
@azumakiyohiko I feel like sushi is a food that is loved by men and women, young and old. But in actuality, there are masterful techniques that a novice can't even fathom going into minute details like the temperature of the rice, or the flavor of the soy sauce, or the preparation of the fish. All of these add up to make it something distinctively different.
13 hours ago via TweetDeck

@masumi_asano
@azumakiyohiko The characters in "Yotsubato!" don't fall into any obvious cliched character types. The deformed drawings are kept to a minimum. @masumi_asano What kind of punchline is that?
12:00 AM Jul 28th via web

This took me a long time to research, and I'm still not sure I completely understand the nuances, but they're using an expression that literally means "Standing by completely naked" which means eagerly awaiting something. It sounds like the term originated with regards to adult media (as in you're so excited for the new video/magazine/whatever to come out that you've already got your clothes off) but has evolved to mean an intense anticipation of anything.
Kind of similar to the English expression "Keep your pants on" I guess.

This has always confused me. Why is it that most businesses worldwide have no problem shipping internationally, but in Japan it's quite unusual if a business will ship internationally.

I own my own business based in the US and we ship worldwide every day. Unless you are shipping something so large or heavy that it must go by freight instead of the post or UPS/FedEx/DHL/etc. there is nothing difficult or complicated about shipping internationally, it's hardly any different than shipping domestically. Is it somehow different in Japan or is this a cultural thing?

>>I've always thought it had to do with the rate,

Why would the rate matter? The customer pays the shipping charge, whatever it might be, according to the exchange rate, whatever it is at the time. You simply charge the customer whatever it costs you to ship the package. Of course it's more expensive to ship internationally, but since the customer is paying for it why does it matter to the seller? Likewise for the exchange rate. If the yen is strong it simply means that the customer pays more during the currency exchange. It has no effect on the seller as the customer pays all those costs.

I'm betting it's either a cultural thing ("we don't want to deal with those nasty foreigners") or perhaps there are legal issues regarding international shipping in Japan that we aren't aware of.

I can tell you the cultural thing is 100% real. I own a large stake in a US tech startup as a result of a patent I own. We sell to the West directly, and we have a business partner which is an established company in Japan. According to our license agreement our Japanese licensee has the sales territory of anywhere in Asia. However, they simply don't want to advertise or do business with either Korea or China, which is mindboggling to me as companies in both countries have strong demand for our product. I understand that Japan has some past differences with other Asian countries, but from a business perspective why on earth would you deliberateelly close the door on sales like that? You don't have to be their best friend, it's simply a business transaction! Japan and the US used to be at war too but we have no problem dealing with each other.

During the earthquake in March, my speakers got broken. It's been too much of a pain, so I haven't done anything about it, but since they still make noise, I thought I'd make a half-hearted attempt to fix them, and I contacted the manufacturer. Holy crap, they told me that if they were damaged in the earthquake, the repairs would only be half price. ELAC is incredible. I wonder where "meri" and "hari" come from in the phrase "meri-hari". What is "meri"? Does it come from "meru"? Today I'm going to work hard and "meru".
3:15 AM Oct 16th via web

This one requires some explaining. There's a Japanese phrase merihari which literally means "shrink and swell" but more loosely translates to "variety." It originally applied to music, but now applies to many things, including work. One person said a rough English equivalent in the context of work would be "Work hard and play hard."
Hari comes from the verb haru (to tighten) which can be seen in the word ganbaru (haru->baru). That's the "Work hard" part.
Meri comes from heru (to loosen), and there is no such word as meru in the Japanese language. I don't know why the sound changes from "he" to "me".
Azuma knows the meaning of the phrase merihari, but doesn't know where it comes from, so he's inventing a made-up word to account for the meri part. So he's saying he's going to ganbaru and meru today. Work and relax.

Sometimes when I click on tweets I can see all the recent replies to it, as well as anything that tweet itself was a reply to.
And sometimes I don't see anything.
This is one of those times. I'm not sure what Azuma was responding to. I looked at Masumi Asano's twitter page, but it's hard to find anything that this looks like it would be referencing.

Anispa is a radio show that Masumi Asano does. The full name is "A&G Super Radio Show Anispa!"
A&G is short for Anime & Games.
I'm guessing Anispa is short for Anime and Super.

I made a mistake in my first attempt at translating that. I deleted the first one and reposted the new translation in >>218103. Rather than "the bookstore Yotsuba was in" he was saying he heard of these things at bookstores with Yotsuba on it (and that would also follow with his second tweet about getting lots of reported sightings). I may still be misunderstanding what he means when he says he "made one" though.

Combing through his twitter replies I managed to find this photo posted by a follower.

He's probably saying "They made one" (as in confirming they actually exist) even though he hasn't personally seen one.

Uhh, so, I just want to say thank you to everyone who's read volume 11. It looks like local booksellers aren't receiving them until Monday. Please be patient a little while longer.

@azumakiyohiko
That's why I'm going to recommend Masumi Asano's book of essays, "Hidamari Jelly". It contains lots of stories from a time when voice actress Masumi Asano was still as pure and innocent as Yotsuba; folding origami, climbing trees, making kneaded erasers, and more. It's very good. http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4043944837/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_cNI0ob0RQNQK2

@azumakiyohiko
I keep getting all this spam email from AU, and I want them to stop sending it, but they just make it too difficult. I can't remember my ID or my password. When I try to get them to tell them to me, they tell me I need some other password to get that information!? I can't remember that one either! Was this it? But when I enter it, they tell me it's wrong and lock my account! Arrrgh!

What does the text on the book that Duralumin is reading say?

  No.218231   Report

>>218229
Yotsuba's book says "Little Bunny and the Red Balloon" (こどもうさぎとあかいふうせん)

I can't quite make out the last character of Duralumin's book, but based on the first two characters of the word I'm guessing it says, roughly, "The Big Book of Bears" (クマ大百科).
