Thinly-justified and wildly inconsistent views on copyright violation aren't much of a stretch around these parts of the internet, the sanctimonious posturing about "respecting" these fictional characters when it's pretty obvious that the people making these edits are devoted fans simply having a bit of fun that gets me. Kriegs's and Beck's edits might not jive with your sense of humour, but our beloved characters have been thoroughly defiled in much more vile ways, and even then I think most of us - and the author himself - have a healthy sense of reality about that fact. Azumanga Daioh is a consumer product, and I think it's rugged enough to withstand the paces its fans put it through.

In my opinion, the only ones who can complain are ADV and the Azuma himself

He has no right to say anything as no part of his translation works were used in any edits that used his scans as a source (as far as I know anyway)

If it was that much of an issue for him, he could have just taken out a Creative Commons license or something on his translations so he could justly bring the fight here

His translation is an unauthorised derived work, so it's warez even when he distributes it.

Creating a derived work is one of the reserved rights under copyright law, and the author of a derived work created in breach of copyright does not enjoy any of copyright's reserved rights.

So if CC license can't actually grant anyone any rights, there's no reason (barring courtesy) anyone would follow any of its restrictions.

Interestingly, the copyright infringement of all of the 'disrespectful' edits could probably be defended under fair use: parody, while the good-faith translation has no leg to stand on ("ADV's translation is shit" is not a legal defense).

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that panel, it's a completely accurate translation of the original (pictured left).
I believe he just finds it too "Americanized" that Yukari would go see The Runaway Bride even though that really is the movie she went to go see.

I can understand people not liking the ADV translation of the manga (especially the first two volumes when Osaka was from New York, packed "meatball subs" in her lunch instead of takoyaki, and prices were all expressed in dollars), but I don't see any reason to dislike it on its own merits.

>> No.111403

>>111399
I always found it amusing that CLAMP did the same thing with volume 3 of xxxHolic. The translator's notes explained that, yes, Star Wars was the movie referenced in the original Japanese.

>> No.111413

>>111399
I found it interesting that each volume gradually became more accurate in regards to the original. Some examples would be Volume 2 had Yukari teaching English instead of Spanish, I think. As well, I think it was understood in this volume that everyone is speaking Japanese, but it's translated to English for our sake, and when people actually do speak English, it's in quotation marks or in a different font. Volume 3 included the Translator's Notes for the first time. Volume 4 had prices in yen instead of dollars. By the end, I thought it became pretty faithful.

One thing I've always wondered about is why did ADV have Osaka speak with a Brooklyn accent in the manga, and a Southern one in the anime? I guess both could work as approximations for an Osakan accent, but why not be consistent with one or the other?

>> No.111416

Protip: ADV is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

>> No.111438

>>111423
I know that, which is why I understand a Southern accent was used in the anime. But even if they're different branches of ADV, how hard would it've been for the people working on the anime and manga to collaborate even a little bit, so there's consistency with things like Osaka's accent. If finding someone with a Houston accent was the easiest route for the anime, I wouldn't think it'd be that hard to do the same for the manga. But they didn't. The fact that the two different mediums use two different accents doesn't seem very professional.

>> No.111439

>>111438
It's not like they were produced at the same time. The manga was released in increments first, followed by the anime. If you follow the manga, you'll see Osaka's New York accent slowly fades away, so they obviously decided it was a poor move on their part. By the time the anime was being dubbed, they had come up with the alternative of using a southern dialect instead.

>> No.111450

>>111439
Fair enough. I briefly looked through the manga again and noticed the New York mannerisms do indeed fade away, and her accent actually seems to drift more towards a Southern accent (besides her "Fugghedaboutit" of course).

>> No.111456

I preferred the New York accent. Southern accents can sound rural.

Fugghedaboutit > Why in the heck?

>> No.111464

>>111456
There's no 1:1 equivalent for regional dialects/accents, so really, neither is specifically more appropriate for Osaka. The Brooklyn accent just happened to ride in on a wave of other egregious Americanizations in the first volume of the manga, and sort of became symbolic of the whole thing. I think that if they hadn't tried to make the comic so "accessible" in the first volume by replacing a lot of the uniquely Japanese flavour with unfunny-to-everyone and often puzzling Americanisms, the Brooklyn accent wouldn't have been so maligned.

I personally find the accents of southerners from Atlanta to be quite charming, even elegant sounding, depending on the social class of the speaker.
