For Azumanga Daiho that is, It's a great show, with fun charaters that just made the show fun to watch over and over again....

But how is AD doing now that it's been over some years since it's release in japanese TV and the DVD's? Are poeple still enjoying it?

If so, then why not have a Azumanga special, like a OAV or some shorts on TV, just to see if the masses still have interests...

I wouldn't mind seeing a "college years" series, or a small set of OAV's based on what they did after highschool.....

You do know about the two very short releases: "A Very Sort Azumanga Daioh Movie" and "Azumanga Web Daioh"? The latter being more original than the former, but both being within the timeline of the original. But it seems that there's no interest by Azuma to expand the story.

I really enjoyed Azu, but honestly I don't really think there should be any more.

Mind you, it's a great show, but it's basically a sitcom. There's only so many times you can make the same (or similar) joke before it starts to become lame. I agree that they could do a small number of short specials or something like that, but I wouldn't want them to make a longer sequel. Chances are it would just overdo it.

It's a bit like Ranma 1/2 (or most Takahashi shows). They're funny at first. But once you've seen the first couple dozen episodes, it's just more of the same. They start really reaching for "new material", and it takes a dive. I belive the proper term is "Jumping the Shark", actually. I'd rather that not happen to Azumanga

You have a point, too much of a fun thing could get boring if they over-do it....

But look at other long running shows in other countries; like Family guy and The Simpsons... Full domestic cartoons, that have been running for YEARS thanks to good writers....

And look at all the fan-fiction wrote about Azu in places such as fan-fiction.net. Based on after their highschool years... there's lots of material that they can work with...

I bet if they round up some writers, and sit down and work (ans i mean REALLY work) on a scipt, they could pull it off with no problems...

>> No.115371

Azumanga reached its logical conclusion. I'm not averse to fan-comics telling of their further adventures, but let it go. Manga is full of bad storytellers (or good storytellers who are led astray by fat paycheques and their swollen egos) who don't know when to let it go, and fans even less willing to let the creaky, shambling thing they keep buying into die; hoping vainly to recapture that sparking of excitement they felt when it was fresh. Azuma, thankfully, seems to understand when a thing has run its course, and as much as I hope Yotsuba&! keeps filling me with joy and giddyness every month, I'm counting on him to put it down when Yotsuba has enjoyed everything. Preferably in quite a few years.

I don't think a sequel would work unless they focussed on a few characters (e.g. Tomo and Osaka, because they go to the same school). They'd have to make up a ton of new characters, too. It could be a good show, but it wouldn't be Azumanga Daioh anymore, effectively.

>> No.115374

Yeah, yeah, I get all the arguements as to why there should be no sequel or expansion beyond high school for the girls.... but something in me just wants to know so much more about them. I want to see them grow up. I want to maybe grow with them.... even if it is some magical suspension of disbelief where they don't age or don't age as fast as we do in this sullen mortal world.

I want so much more of those wonderful little make-believe people who have strangely meant so much to me.

I know it is silly.

But I just do.

That was exactly my point though. Shows like the Simpsons have had an extremely long run. But that doesn't mean that they've had a long QUALITY run. (as I mentioned before, there is a lot of Anime with huge numbers of episodes too). But, those shows are all going downhill.

The Simpsons has some brilliant moments. A handful of the episodes are downright masterpieces. But, it's not as funny as it used to be. The quality is going continually downhill. It has become exactly what I DON'T want to happen to Azu.

As it stands Azu is fabulous...if they try and milk more episdoes out of it, it's just going to get worse as they keep going...and sadly that would affect the entire show. Don't wish for Azu to become another Ranma.

I have often found myself wishing that there was more of my favorite shows. But, when I step back and think about it, one of the key reasons WHY I liked those shows so much is becasue they cut out all the BS, and while they might not have a huge number of hours of content, the entirety of the content they DO have is top-notch. I would much rather watch a 3-hour series that was consistently super-high quality rather than a 20+ hour series with the inevietable ups and downs.

All the girl supposedly playing Yomi would need to do is grow her hair out, and things would be fine. I particularly like Ayumu's "What'chu talkin' 'bout, Willis"'? expression.

Not that I particularly want a sequel, but I remember hearing that Gainax started as a bunch of college students who formed a company because they didn't want to break up their gang after graduation. Well, if Ms. Mihama can provide the capital and Osaka the blue-sky innovation, I'm sure Azumanga, LLC could be very successful.

Heh, I recognize this feeling all too well. Part of me wants to disagree with all the points made against a 'season 2', but inside I know that Anonymous is right.
Still, the "Continuation!!"(see picture) urge that finishing ep26 or book 4 generates is remarkably strong. Maybe this is because it was so clear from the beginning that that was all, The End, book closed, etc. where so many other titles leave the door open for future chapters and seasons. I have seen more than one anime or manga reviewer mention how AD leaves you longing for more.

It would be nice if Azuma would one day do an AD short story, a one-shot of sorts, a Christmas special, hell, I don't know. Kind of like how Neil Gaiman wrote a few more standalone stories long after he finished the Sandman series, but I don't believe this is a tradition in Manga.

Maybe just one more bow from the girls....

It doesn't have to be a long series or a strongly written OAV, but a something that says that Mr. Azuma is watching over or opinions.

To see Osaka have a stand-alone episode with one of her jokes, or having Karoi trying to be close to Sakaki...

Or another cooking short with Chiyo, or having Tomoe running amuck and making things fun for us all....

Maybe having the Yukari and Nyamo have another spat over beer and Sashimi at their favotie bar....

In short, i just MISSED them, i know i could just throw a DVD in the player and see them for hours on and, but i miss NOT knowing what they'll do next....

So i guess.... that all we can do is wait huh...?

Sure, let's just keep adding shit to the show. It worked for eva, what could go wrong?

Seriously, what I like about the story telling of Azu was the complete arc. Start, middle and end. Dude knew what he was doing, for real. He captured a moment in time and allowed us to enjoy it forever.

It remains like our own memories of innocent youth, something we can always look back on, something we don't want spoiled by the realities of adulthood and the harshness of facing the grown up world. The innocence of the girls just couldn't be maintained, not really. Who would want to see any of them grown old and cynical?

I have to admit that on the whole you're right, but that doesn't mean ALL fan-fiction writers are bad. I enjoy reading quite a few authors, even a few of those who still haven't quite got the hang of using the spellchecker yet, or who were not paying attention during English Grammar 101! We all have our own ideas of what would have happened 'afterwards'. You have yours, I suppose; I have mine, they have theirs. You don't have to read them, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't write them or publish them, no matter how juvenile they are, or how badly their spelling, grammar or even just the basic ideas get up your nose.

Can you do better than the ones you dislike, or is it a general hate for fan-fiction, on principle, so-to-speak?

If you like, you may consider this a challenge. If you don't wish to take it up, for your own reasons, that's OK, but if you do, I'd be genuinly interested to read it.

Fan fiction is the devil.

Most of what I've seen simply inserts a new character that is clearly the alter ego of the author, is a masturbatory character fetish fantasy or is just plain bad.

The characters are part of a vision that the original author had. Remove the original inspiration and you're tearing something from the heart of the characters. Which is why every fan fiction I have ever read has been a heartless doppleganger travesty and a literary train wreck.

And as a creative writer myself, I would be horrified to have to read someone's "interpretation" of one of my stories or characters. Therefore it can be said I stand against it principally, as well as my above stated reason.

Put your talents to work in an original direction. Quit jizzing all over someone else's original creations.

There's always the few gems in the garbage dumpster though. There are many sets of characters which do well in particular types of situations, and one can write a good fanfic by putting them in one of those types of situations that makes sense for the characters.

99.5% of fan-fiction is absolute shit. You really have to scour the internet to find something worth reading.

I write fan-fiction myself -- not that I'm any good -- but at least I don't neglect spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc, which is where most people go wrong, sadly.

Counterpoint.

Think of it this way: would you rather have a relationsihp with some random faceless pornstar bimbo, or the cute girl who sits across from you in math? Now extended it further into the realm of a sexual fantasy: would you rather fantasize about some dime-a-dozen porn star (of which there are millions to be had online), or would you rather fantasize about someone close to you that you actually know something about? When doing the latter, the fantasy becomes more powerful, for the same reason that a relationship with someone you're close to is far stronger than a casual relationship with a stranger.
