3rd of May: Constitution Memorial DayThis day commemorates when Japans constitution came into effect: 3rd of May 1947The constitution was created while Japan was under Allied occupation after World War 2, and serves to replace the imperial monarchy with a democratic government.Article 9 of the constitution generates much debate, as it is the article which prevents Japan from having an army. This article has indirectly led to the creation of the National Police Force, which later became the Japan Self Defense Force. The constitution of Japan is one of the "Six Codes", the six codes of law which make up the main body of Japanese law. These codes are often compiled together in what is called Roppō Zensho (Statutory Volume/Book of Statutes), the book Ena is holding here.
>>123773If I remember correctly, last year it was mentioned in the news that the Japanese government amended the 9th Article so that Japan once again had a legal,, formal, standing Military organization force.

Didn't Japan deploy an armed force in Iraq? I'm not sure if they did anything, though.
>>123786They sent a Engineer company but it was unarmed IIRC.
I don't mean to be a peacenik hippie or anything, but can there be maybe just one country on Earth that doesn't feel the need to express its "national pride" through military means?

>>123791 Amen. Militarism in Japan is on the rise these days, which I regret; I would have hoped that a generation raised without warmaking would have begun to feel that this was the natural state of affairs. In this, I have always regarded Japan as a special country, a priest among nations. I hope they never do change it.

>>123880 I don't see how the experience of a few hundred or even thousand peacekeepers will help, unless Japan's defense strategy against the DPRK and China is based on being able to credibly defeat them, hold them back, or even inflict significant punishment on them in conventional warfare. But those two regimes have been around for almost sixty years now, and at times far more bellicose and radical--yet Japan is still here, peaceful and prosperous. There are smarter ways to keep one's country strong. Taiwan's best protection against the PRC is that they are their biggest foreign investor; and that's not extortion money, either--you can bet the Taiwanese are making good money off their investments.

>>123995Sure, but I bet that the Japanese government has something up there sleeve. A lot of things supposedly don't add up in places.
I suppose if Japan absolutely had to, it wouldn't be difficult for them to assemble some nuclear weapons quickly as a deterrent, and I wouldn't be surprised if they've had a standby plan for years on how to do so.
