I've started hearing a lot of restless queries about what's going on with Vol. 8, so here's the current status. Volume 8 is currently in the preparation stages and is set for release in August. The last serialized chapter going into volume 8 is in production right now. Yotsuba &! was supposed to be in a rotation of 1 volume every 8 months, but this one's taking an extra three months. It's way behind.

The reason it's running so late is that I just don't have enough ability and power. Sorry. I established Yotsuba &! with the goal of raising the bar art-wise every volume. I'd hope I can get you not to notice so much on this point when you're reading, though. I started in a slightly new direction with volume 6, evolved that a bit in volume 7, and I'll be completing that route in volume 8. However, being on the verge of completing this goal is a really rough struggle for me. Please wait just a bit more 'til it's done.

Changing the subject...

Before drawing a manga, there are doodle- or sketch-like blueprints known as "name" or "conte". [Both roughly = storyboards.] The ones for Yotsuba&! are done as two-page spreads on B4-size paper, as shown in the picture above. They're drawn at full size for serialized publication.

However, a little while ago, I went out for Korean barbecue with Chika Umino. During dinner, I heard that drawing at a smaller size was pretty nice, so I tried an 8-page-per-sheet format, like the one shown at right above. That's made things a little easier, both production-wise and mentally.

Doesn't he do them himself? Normally, you'd think the assistants would do it, but seeing as the backgrounds are one of the things he improves the most in the tankobon changes...

Her English was appalling. Everything I read that she'd written was like three pages of solid Engrish. Funny to read, but a real bitch to peer review because there's not really a tactful way to say "I can't really say what works and what doesn't because none of it makes any goddamn sense." So instead of trying, I made a joke about the part where she says she ate a muffin that she found under her refrigerator.

Of course, having a poorer grasp of the language than my cat, she takes this entirely the wrong way, assumes I'm making fun of her, and sits clear on the other side of the room and generally avoids me for the rest of the semester. (It also didn't help that I showed up to class one day half-asleep with a monster headache and accidentally fed her misinformation that caused her to fuck up a class assignment.)

Her friend was still friendly with me, though. Of course she looked like a female Asian Haley Joel Osment, so that kinda put a damper on my enthusiasm there. Because I am apparently a shallow asshole.
