This could've been placed in a better location.

As for the reason this was published, people were upset about a forum going down. Like I said, there's a better place for these kinds of things like a dA Journal.

It started off okay when it was just mildly out of character shenanigans, but when it began to morph from Yukari slapping people with a dildo to this:

>I'm a mutagenic Veluszhi alien from a faraway world. I came here to conquer the planet.

and

>I know what Beta-Paragon is too. It's a superpowered being that can bring people back to life. The only problem is, it can't live outside of its stasis tube for very long because its own genes are incompatible with each other. If GLaDOS got his DNA, she could use it as genetic glue to hold its genes in place, and it could survive forever. It'll bring all those he killed back to life. Like mom, dad, and Ena...

I just find it too retarded to even look at.

It probably doesn't help that I find chatroom/message board roleplay to be pretty meritless to begin with though.

But hey, don't let me piss on your parade. If you enjoy it, whatever, I have no trouble scrolling past the threads (although it does bother me that they tend to dominate about 90% of all the new posts on this board).
I'm just saying I wouldn't shed any tears if you guys decided to wrap it up sometime soon.

  No.182420

For me it was the other way around: didn't particularly care for YiF until it was several months underway, but now I find it addictive.

I can see how its dominace of /azu/ may put some people off, though. Thankfully it's limited to two ongoing threads at the time.

>>182408
I do agree that there used to be more actual discussion in the past (even if I'm not much of a debater myself). I think it's not so much YiF, as it is all the imagedump threads that are being bumped back to the front page several times a day. I know I'm one of those that lobbied for longer thread life in the past, but didn't really foresee this effect. I'm also not really sure what can/should be done about it.

  No.182425

Yeah, sorry bout that Ralen. Even I find those bits retarded, and I wrote them both! I'm also genuinely sorry that I'm too addicted to YiF to be going anywhere soon.

>>Sprocket, Chile-anon(r.i.p.)

What ever happened to them anyway?

I kinda figure I get what Ralen speaks of. Back in the fall of 2007(?), I came here (well, Chiyo-chan, then Shimauu when the board first dropped off) less for the Azumanga, and more for the meta /Azu/.
Freudian discussions. A couple of named carrying on both silly and serious but ever-entertaining banter. A plethora of diehard Anonymous (as we were called back in the day) desperate for the beloved board. I felt an immense sense of community then.
I wasn't here for the board's creation, but I'll assume this is the Iron Age of /azu/. A different land stands before us, new denizens taking the place of those passed on to Elysium. /overdramatic
There are pretty much 4 exact types of encounters on Azu: YiF (gold for those who like it, plague for those who don't), Translations (no new chapter coming for months ;_;), Imagedumps (because we don't already have every MSPaint comic of specified character), and stuff like this, something uncategorized that generates discussion. I miss more stuff like that.
Remember that one thread, where the OP was an image of naked Sakaki holding a Chiyo-chichi doll? No words, just one image. That spawned a ridiculous amount of conversation, and it's still my favourite thread this board has ever hosted. Things have changed.

  No.182431

Well, it was always my impression that the reason for things like YiF is that--when you come down to it--there's not that much actual Azumanga Daioh to discuss. 26 episodes, four volumes of manga, the short promo film, right? And it's not like Evangelion, so chock-full-o-cryptic that entire threads can be devoted to the mysteries of a still-frame. So people make up stuff like "Yukari Is Free" to kind of fill the gap.

  No.182432

I wonder if there would be any merit in watching one episode and then attempting to analyse every last detail, reading much more into it than was originally intended.

We also used to have Kriegsaffe edits, Peter Beck edits (Social Disaster has kind of filled Peter Beck's niche in that regard) and Peter Nguyen and Ragathol used to post art from time to time.

Chileanon said a while back he wouldn't be coming around much anymore. He had some major(?) surgery some weeks before that, I don't know if the two are related or not.

>>(although it does bother me that they tend to dominate about 90% of all the new posts on this board).

Sometimes I do feel kinda bad that we've gotten to be such a huge thing. Though like Vision said a lot of it is all the image threads that keep getting bumped too. I don't mind an image thread every now and then, but it starts to feel like a "Lets all just do nothing but post pictures" party it starts to get a little irritating. Though as you said of YiF, I can just scroll on past. And save anything that I like.

>>182431
Well there's also Yotsuba to talk about, but with all the month-long gaps between chapters lately there's not really a whole lot of new ground to cover. I mean you can only talk about Fuuka's eyebrows and thighs for so long.

I don't know about other people's opinions, but I've been visiting and occasionally posting for the last eight months and it amazes me that this particular board is so active compared to the other boards. It says more about the enduring strengths of Azumanga Daioh than any opinion actually voiced. We could easily fill an entire siteful of boards IMO. As to anyone saying too few people are posting too much, I can't say I have any complaints about that, after all it isn't the crap that infests 4chan but something actually worth reading, and it I had issues with it I'd post more myself rather than complain. If RL wasn't such a time-eater I would.

  No.182697

I think it's kind of a compliment to Azumanga Daioh in a way that people watch the show more than they analyze it. It isn't much on angst, drama, or symbolism. On the other hand, it does cute, sexy*, and funny very well, with just a dash of poignancy.

Image threads bumping off what, other image threads?
Protip: there's more than one page! Chances are the thread was only put on the second page.
And one YiF thread is more than enough, but that's just me. Not to mention that they now cut off at 666 posts. God knows how many dead 666 threads you're going to wade through to look for older posts, but it's no big deal, right?

>started with the super zombies, accelerated with the furries,

I don't know if it started there. Personally I thought the whole zombie/furry saga they had was the best/most hilarious material they've had. Things started to lose steam when they escaped the city and ORIGINAL CHARACTERS(DO NOT STEAL) started showing up. And to give them some credit I don't think things would be so active around here without the help of the yif threads. like it or not.

i wouldnt argue with the fact that it is azu's savior but i maintain my opinion that the hilarity died down hard once the super zombies got on the scene

theres nothing wrong with starting fresh every once and a while either. YIF has stagnated in my opinion, too many people want into it, its gone on for way too long, its only natural that things would start to degrade.

maybe someone could set up a second RP or something else,

I am going to have to cosign on this poster's sentiments, for the most part

> It started off okay when it was just mildly out of character shenanigans
> It probably doesn't help that I find chatroom/message board roleplay to be pretty meritless to begin with though
> But hey, don't let me piss on your parade.

I dont really enjoy the YiF stuff but it started off as some kind of on-topic for this board and when it comes to stuff like that I usually just think 'if it pisses you off close the tab and ignore the thread.'

However ... koichan will show 11 pictures from a thread, even after 'X posts and X image replies omitted. Click Reply to view' so that's a minimum of 22 pictures I have to scroll past every time I visit - YiF and YiF metadiscussion thread, both always seem to be on the top of page 1 when I visit. And basically all I'm saying is that I used to think of yotsuba and azumanga when I thought of this board but now I think of a fanfic with illustrations that were once azu-related.

  No.186145

So are we killing /azu/, or saving it, or both at the same time, or what.

Would you prefer it if we took it to, say, the Shimauu board, and saw whether or not it impacted the activity here?

Kinda makes me wish this place had a thread hiding feature if the YiF threads are bothering more than a few people.

  No.186200

Both. For better or worse.

I'll admit, I don't come here to see photoshopped images with inane dialogue to match, but YiF isn't the problem. It's the people making a big deal out if it. I feel for them since I do want to focus on other things, but that's our problem. We've ignored floods of spam and trolls that took over this board before, I don't see an issue dealing with two threads being bumped consistently with something relevant.
I don't want to cause any tension here, but I think was a long time coming from a few here.

  No.186263

Yukari is free has spawned lots of activity, but maybe at the expense of other, arguably more creative or relavent forms of activity.

For instance, there have been days where the board is bustling, but the amount of posts activity outside of the Yukari is Free (I refuse to abbreviate it YiF) threads is next to zero, so to those of us who skip over those threads, it looks like the board is stagnating.

If it were to suddenly die, I think there would be a sudden drop in other sorts of posting, but it would right itself eventually. I could also imagine the opposite happening though.
