I'll buy it for the second time if it means they clean up Osaka's "dialect".

  No.184076

I didn't know the Azumanga license was no longer with ADV either (If this was mentioned before, I somehow missed it).

If there's any significant changes I may buy it a third time, even.

  No.184080

I wasn't aware, either (Kurt Hassler says December is their aim for a release. Hmm). It gives them a chance to clean up a few things, though.
I was going to say they should do the same for Yotsuba (volume 3, at least), but there's nothing a piece of paper, some tape, and a sharpie can't fix.

  No.184099

Consarn it, I already own three versions of this manga.
Maybe one more will fill that void in my soul.

>>clean up Osaka's "dialect"

I recall reading somewhere they'd already done that for the omnibus. That's the version I have and I never noticed anything real "Brooklyn-esque" about any of Osaka's dialog, at least.

What I wanna know is if we'll ever get the tenth anniversary version with the new art and shit, or if we'll have to settle for scans.

I also wouldn't mind seeing a fixed-up version of volume 3 released.

What's the point in having two translations of a manga on the market?
It's not like one of those oldschool ones from the 80s or 90s where they flipped the page order, changed dialogue, and removed tons of "questionable" content. Azumanga was pretty faithful the first time around.

Save that first volume. Didn't ADV fire whoever did the translation work on that one?

I have no idea.
The first volume wasn't bad per se, it just wasn't as good as the subsequent ones.

And it was better than most manga being translated prior to or around that time.

I wonder if Yen Press is going to rerelease the first 5 volumes of Yotsuba too...

  No.184185

Losing the rights to Azumanga AND Yotsuba?!
That's it, ADV is fucked.

I don't see the point in an alternate volume, the Azumanga translation is pretty good, they only missed like 3 jokes. The original run of VOL 1. did have some problems, especailly when Tomo called Chiyo a "turd" which I felt to be uncharacteristic, but that was fixed in the omnibus.

Maybe they'll just take the ADV translation and whore it for cash.

So, what is Yen Press like?

They're pretty new as a publisher of manga and Korean comics, but I've heard they're a solid company.
A few of the titles they handled: Soul Eater, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Spice and wolf, and S.S. Astro, which someone here recommended. They also head the anthology magazine Yen Plus.

It's complicated, but I've seen this happen with anime series/films such as One Piece and Patlabor. With the Patlabor films, when Manga Entertainment no longer had the copyright Bandai Visual redid everything (sub, dub, etc.). It makes sense considering the former company had the rights to do all that work, so the new company scrapes that and make their own.
I don't recall a series where one distributor just handed over the work they did and let the new company reuse that, 'cept for maybe Geneon but they sold -everything- they had to sell practically.
Legal reasons, most likely.

>I wonder if Yen Press is going to rerelease the first 5 volumes of Yotsuba too...

Once those volumes go out of print (Amazon shows at least the first two volumes already are), I would guess eventually.
So far, though, they only have 6, 7 and 8 licensed.

  No.184264

Yen have already stated they're re-releasing all of Yotobs. Vol 1 is due for release shortly after vol 6

It seemed that each volume of Azumanga improved on the preceding one. Like, Volume 2 had Yukari teaching English instead of Spanish like in Volume 1. Volume 3 and 4 had the translator's notes included, which the first two didn't. And Volume 4 used yen for money, instead of dollars like in Vol 1-3.

>>184186
I have the first couple of volumes of Sunshine (Hidamari) Sketch, which they put out. The quality is pretty good, and I don't really have any problems with the translation. It seems more literal than, say, ADV's work, but it still comes off fine.
One quibble, though, is that they left a couple of Japanese words in when they could have been translated easily. Like leaving the Japanese word for "tapir" in it ("boku"), instead of translating it, or leaving in Miyako's "Okaeri!" and Yuno's "Tadaima!" at one point, even though they never left it like that before or after. Still, I'm confident they'll do a good job with Yotsuba.

  No.184277

Oops, that should've been "baku" not "boku".

The upcoming release is NOT the 10th anniversary one:

They say if the opportunity arises they will consider it, at least.

Hey, there's a part two to the interview.

>>NOT the 10th anniversary one

Aw, crap.

  No.184363

Really? They only have the unreleased volumes scheduled on their site.
http://yenpress.us/?page_id=636
They way it's laid out is kind of tight if they released the previous volumes.
If that's true at least that means I get a new Yotsuba after I get a few paychecks.
