So, all of this that is happening is scattered through the 3 year timeline? I just feel like Tomo's hair is going slightly up and down, up and down, etc. in every other panel. Not that I mind, variety is good.

Anyway, is there anything noteworthy about the DVD rerelease? It looks like just a regular boxset, which we already got, but maybe Japan hasn't, yet.
That's pretty cool that Azumanga is becoming a cashcow again. Maybe they'll build enough funds to make a OVA series out of these strips!

I thought the same, too. It's not entirely out of character, but it was pretty random. Like, Family Guy random.
Also, I didn't know DVDs were that prevalent back in, what, 2000? 2001 even.

More importantly I noticed about all of this, Tomo. I'm not the biggest fan, but she has my respect now. Just do what you want, to hell with everyone else. She even said in the series, "the way I run! The way I live!".

I got my first DVD player back in 2000, which was a bad mistake. It was expensive and sucky and huge and didn't have many functions. I used it like 20 times.

Tomo and Yomi were VHS users, right? Yomi asked Tomo to record some TV show. Tomo forgot and hilarious stuff followed.

Also, Azumanga Daioh the Animation was released on VHS if I remember correctly. And now I want a copy.

Alike this guy: >>191112 I "marked out" for want of a better term, at this mention of one of the girl's family members. I've always been kinda curious about what some of their family members are like.

The funniest part of the whole Giraffe skit was to me, the title of the first one, "Awakening", as though Tomo finally realized her inner furry.

Also, does anyone know what this mention of "Anne" was about? It perplexed me. It couldn't possibly be from that text book where Yukari subsituted Tomo's name for that of the girl in the book to upset her. That would be too obscure, I'd think.

The Daddy Long Legs strips are referring to this book, which was apparently adapted to an anime in Japan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daddy-Long-Legs_(novel)
I'm not certain, but I think "Anne" refers to Anne of Green Gables. Osaka's getting her and the main character from Daddy Long Legs mixed up. They're both red headed orphan girls from the early 1900s.

I didn't get the punchline of >>191112.

Osaka always asks the most interesting questions. She's one good math teacher away from stumbling across the notion of orders of infinity, which is just exactly freakish enough for her to understand.

(Space isn't actually infinite, by the way. We don't think. We're pretty sure it's finite and growing -- but it doesn't have an edge, either, because theoretically you'd wrap around another side. However, you can't actually go that fast.)

The idea of orders of infinity is that there are different sizes of infinity. There is the infinity of numbers (1,2,3), which is not as big as the infinity of points on a line. On the other hand, the infinity of points on a line is as big as the infinity of points in a plane, kind of like the infinity of whole numbers is the same size as the infinity of even numbers.

Srsly, I think Osaka has the mental chops to be an awesome academe. She just needs something to get her focused.

It would be more interesting if he combined the two styles, like how they did in the MK or SF games; how old versions of the characters fight new ones.

If I look really close I can maybe see something coming down behind her ear in that panel.

Could be a braid, or it could just be hair coming down the back of the neck. I think it's too small to say either way, really.

Or I could just be crazy.

And I think I like that new swimsuit Sakaki better, actually. It looks more tasteful, in a way.

  No.191228

>>191227
It is tasteful, but I like the raunchiness he can show sometimes.
Even Chiyo. Her expressions looked just right in the old strip. The new one, as crazy as it sounds, reminds me too much of Yotsuba. I kind of liked that there was a difference between them in those regards.

  No.191229

>>191228
Chiyo looking so much like Yotsuba throws me off a little too.

But Chiyo was never one of my favorite characters anyway, so I don't think I'll be losing too much sleep over it.

Whoa, slow down, I'm not keeping up with everything that's happened the past 48 hours.
First off: thanks again for the fast translations (if you get your translations way before you even have time to settle down and read them, count your blessings).
lovely cover image (Osaka's inflatable whale shark!), Osaka, Sakaki and especially Tomo are getting the best parts (Tomo reminded me of Yotsuba a couple of times, never saw that until now)

>I didn't know DVDs were that prevalent back in, what, 2000? 2001 even

The idea I got from the strip was that the Mihama family would probably be the only one from the group that could afford their own dvd player (I'm guessing Tomo had that in the back of her mind when she went shopping prior to the visit)

>New OST cd release

Seems unlikely there will be new stuff, as there is nothing newly animted. I did gather from the description that it contains 2 cds, though, so I'm asuming you're getting both of the old OST cds in one package now.

I'm still wondering what's up with that ridiculously expensive limited editon DVD (and why they chose the old Short Movie-style artwork for the cover instead of new art).

>>191204
>>191217
Whoa, whoa, whoa, this is going a lot further than I expected. Easy, Azuma, I am gonna need time to adjust my worldview.
No wonder he remarked in his blog what a hell of a job it was. (The mention of George Lucas' name in this effect made me feel a little uncomfortable)

>I'm asuming you're getting both of the old OST cds in one package now.

My thoughts EXACTLY. Unlike other anime series, AzuDai didn't skimp on what they had when it came to releasing OSTs. What you heard on the show was all there in those two albums.
You can save yourself the moolah and get both from here:

I'm a diehard fan, though, so I'm going to get the new album anyway :3

>I didn't know DVDs were that prevalent back in, what, 2000? 2001 even

I assume that Azumanga doesn't have any definitive date and simply takes place in "modern times" thus the trends present in the comics depend on when the strip was actually written.

I'm a little disappointed, but also intrigued.
The old Sakaki pinup is a classic, but at least her boobs aren't all splayed apart now. I've noticed the better Azuma's anatomy gets though, the dirtier his cheesecake shots seem to look. Like >>191078 for instance. I felt kind of weird looking at that the first time I saw it.
I'm going to miss the old kitty panties, but the new ones are more realistic looking (as in, you might actually find underwear like that).
I can't choose, I love both editions (not just referring to the panties here). This does have a real "Special Edition" Star Wars vibe to it though. I definitely understand the motivation to revise something you did 10 years ago that I'm sure looks like absolute garbage to you by this point, but the fans loved the original the way it was.

I think it's really interesting that even though he's redrawing the old pages, he's keeping Chiyo's pigtail style the same from the first volume (where they looked like normal hair instead of weird corn cob things).

The new CD is indeed just the old two OST's combined into a single package. There's no new content on either that, or the DVDs, according to the notice posted at the front of last month's new strips (>>188895).

I also find it kind of odd that in Japan, the manga is way cheaper, but the CDs and DVDs are way way more expensive.

The new edition of Volume 1 is out today in Japan. It was supposed to come out the same day as the new strips in Monthly Sunday, but we got Monthly Sunday a few days early.

Well it just seems like a bit of a wasted effort for both of us to release (in this case nearly identical) translations, with ocassional multiple revisions along the way on both our parts, when we could just release a single, awesome volume the first time.
Although there is the issue of potential creative differences on how to render a particular piece of dialogue...

For some reason the 言わな here was giving me trouble the first time through... I don't know why I thought it was non-negative. The title now makes more sense too, 'Entertainment' as in humoring the rich investor. I changed it slightly here to reflect that.

I thought of putting in notes about Daddy Long Legs and Anne of Green Gables, but I figured since they're English literature (well technically American and Canadian respectively) that if Japanese high school students knew about it, it would be kind of sad to have to have a note for English speaking audiences.
Even though I had to look them both up to get the references myself...

There's that too. Often, we can come up with different, equally valid interpretations, leaving it up to the readers to pick whichever they prefer. Who are we to deny them that choice? :-)

Ok after seeing them put side to side like that I can actually see a good distinction between the two. And I have to admit I really prefer the old style more. I think Chiyo-chan looks better in the old style Yukari looked better too and goddammit Rachel is important to me so why did she suddenly disappear? Though I do think Sakaki overall looks better I like the older face more but her body looks better(har har)I just think that the older style has her look a bit more intimidating which was important to her character while the new style has her softened up and in my opinion it makes her look less like the stoic loner and more like she's just awkward. I agree with the both of yous. I already know how the story ends (unless Azuma wants something to add...), so these new edition are pointless in this regard, but it doesn't hurt to have something new!
Best case scenario, Azuma will use this as an excuse to go ahead with a revision of the anime ('ala Kanon, Eva, etc.), and worst case, new fans will take notice of the series.
Also, unlike Lucus, Azuma isn't taking a shit on the readers. He isn't putting in Jar Jar Binks and Samuel Jackson and expecting people to eat that up. Azuma's more like Notorious B.I.G. (r.i.p.); selling crack to pregnant woman 'cause he has his own baby to feed and care for so he had to do what he has to do to make money.

I laughed at this change.
From the end of the "Marco" chapter. Originally Yukari says something like "I'm sure it'll make it just fine on its own" after the kitten jumps out the window.

In this version she just says "Well, shut the window on your way out. Hurry up and get home."

Damn! I love that! That's my favorite change so far.

That's pretty dark, but I can see her doing that in the original, too. It reminds me of the Simpsons style of humor, too.

Isn't that only domestic shipping?
Anyway, I'm not purchasing over $25 worth.

I've never tried to order anything from them, but I'm pretty sure I heard Amazon.co.jp doesn't even ship outside Japan.

No thanks.

You can
http://www.amazon.co.jp/In-English/b?ie=UTF8&node=1094656

They don't ship electronic stuff like DVDs, video games, etc. Books should be ok.
All I know is, it's been almost a week since Yes Asia has been "processing" my copy order of the new Azumanga volume.

If you read the fine print, it says that on non-express orders, it can take up to 21 days to "process" an order.

I ordered mine last night, and the estimated arrival date is mid July sometime.

Sasuga Books just got it in yesterday. They ship out of the US, so it's a little bit faster - I think they're based in Boston somewhere.
