So,
Anime fan here, never seen Azumanga Daioh. I'm /r/ing your advice as to whether or not I should. I "discovered" AD through its overwhelming presence in the AMV Hell videos.
Now I usually prefer complex and cerebral stuff like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Serial Experiments: Lain, Paranoia Agent etc., but every once in a while I find something goofy that I enjoy, e.g. Girls Bravo.
What say you, /azu/?

  No.193592

Girls bravo was shit.

GTFO of here and watch azumanga daioh and read yotsuba, and don't come back til you have.

And then when you come back, lurk for a while.

  No.193593

Trying to decide whether it's worth my time. You're not convincing me that it is.

  No.193597

I love all of the anime you just listed (except GB) and I adore Azumanga. Maybe you should just watch the first few episodes and see if it's your thing.

  No.193599

Sorry about those wankers(>>193592 >>193595)
I've never been much of a one for recommending or explaining why people should check out certain things, so I don't really have anything to say on the subject.

>>193597
This guy seems to have the right idea, though. Looking for clips and whatnot on youtube might be a good way to sample the series.
I wouldn't recommend the first episode though, as it has a recurring bit with one of the characters(Chiyo) cooking, and it just about gave me brain damage.

>>I'm /r/ing your advice as to whether or not I should

You're asking a board dedicated to Azumanga Daioh whether or not you should watch it...I think you can figure out the answer before hand.

  No.193606

Seriously, go ahead and watch it. If you don't care for it, stop, but at least give it 4 or 5 episodes. There are only 26 episodes so you won't lose much time if you end up not liking it.

  No.193607

I discovered Azumanga Daioh through AMV Hell 3 myself. Before that the only anime I'd ever seen was stuff on Adult Swim.

It does seem a bit too random at first, especially the first episode, but like they said, give it at least 4 episodes before you decide.

I tried to get a friend of mine to watch it, but after the second episode, she said it just wasn't her thing. I think she might have liked it if she'd given it a little longer.

Pilot Candidate is criminally underrated.

He should stop posting now and go watch it.

>>193590 Really, what you're saying is: "If I watch anime that isn't SERIOUS BUSINESS people might think I'm a weeaboo".

Just watch it, it's funny, it's cute, and it's fun. Go Go GO! Shoo! Away with you! Off to the subs you go!

>>193607 It's really sad, but that was all I used to watch to.

Now I try to find the most obscure anime I can find so I can say "Have you heard of X? X is so great! You should watch it!".

Same thing with LS; a lot of people wouldn't watch past the first ep, because of the whole first scene thing. Gotta give it about 5 eps.

In Lucky Star's case, the director actually changed after episode 4, didn't it?

People always say how for the early episodes Lucky Channel was its only redeeming quality, but I strongly disagree. The food discussion in episode 1 is what really hooked me (actually, the dancing OP is what sparked my interest in the first place, same with the dancing ED being what sparked my interest in Haruhi).
I didn't think Lucky Channel really started being good until about half way through the series though.

Lucky Star got me by not being boring, even the food talk had something to it. In other anime when they start talking about food i instinctively reach for the fastforward button, but this, although not exactly funny, was captivating.

  No.193672

>>193650
I got the same feeling. Normally, girl-talk makes me want to kill myself, but the way it's presented in LS, Azu, K-on, etc. really interest me. Maybe its because the friends I do have all have drug/sexuality issues that I just don't care for. While not relaxing, its a breath of fresh air to hear people talk about putting ribbons on your hair or how to cure a cold instead of what I normally hear from peers.

Unless the only reason you liked Girls Bravo was the fanservice, you'll probably like Azumanga Daioh. The characters are fun to spend time with.

>>193618
I don't give a shit if people assume... well, any manner of things about me. If I'm a weeaboo to you, so be it. I freely admit to having a deep admiration of Japanese culture. The reason I like cerebral/complex/"serious business" stuff is that it stimulates my intellect. I'm not just that way with anime - my favorite regular books, movies, and tv shows have those tendencies too.

>>193682
I won't try to pretend that I'm immune to the draw of fanservice, but I have to admit, as repetitive and just idiotically silly as that series was, I pretty much came to care about those characters after a while.

>>193606
>>193607
This is the advice I choose to follow. Thanks for the heads-up of giving it a few episodes, I might have prematurely given up on it otherwise.

Hello, me.

  No.193748

>>193691 Well, while I like your attitude of not giving a shit what people think.

I have to say, that's pretty insecure; You only want to watch "cerebral" stuff because it makes you feel smart is what you're saying, and you don't wanna watch comedy anime because you think it'll make you low brow.

I liked those shows(cept eva) too, but geez, those are the only kind you watch? You cannot call yourself an anime fan then.

Step 1: Go watch azu(and read yotsuba&!), LS, Welcome to the NHK.
step 2: Watch The third, Gurren Lagann, and samurai champloo, for sum action.
step 3: watch stuff like kanon, or clannad(this stuff is smart, and is heartwarming).
step 4: watch the girl who leapt through time.
step 5: ????
step 6: You are now an anime fan.

What?

Now I've never seen Clannad, but the impression I've gotten was that it's a total tear jerker.

  No.193752

>>193751
The visual novel (and movie) is total tear-jerk, the series however is split into two parts, Clannad and Clannad afterstory, of which the first is basically pure comedy, and all the tearjerking stuff was moved to the second one.

  No.193753

>>193751 Well yeah, it's sad, but it's also very heartwarming at times.

Maybe, I should say it's "emotional", but that sounds lame.

Also, you need to watch it.

Seeing as it will give you hope.

Nagisa dies! But don't get sad! In the end tomoya goes back in time with magik and brings her back to life. And then there is a happy heartwarming ending.

Yeah, I grew to like Girls Bravo more than I expected to. Sometimes I even find the fanservice a bit annoying as a distraction from the character interaction.
