I'll grant that Yukari's face looks a bit Yotsy around the eyes (though if you're going to complain about that you might want to start with Tomo and especially Chiyo), but I have no clue what's supposed to be so similar between Sakaki and Fuuka.

>I just don't like it as much as the old style

It's kinda weird seeing people refer to the "old style" because I'm not sure there is one. Azuma's art improved a fair bit as he worked on Azumanga, so that it looked significantly different between the beginning and the end. I mean, would you have classed the work from book four as "the old style" as well? Because I'd say it's closer to what he's doing now than it is to the art in the first book.

It always confuses me when I see people saying they don't like the new material because it's drawn in the "Yotsuba style," as if he has a distinct style for that and another for Azumanga.

I swear I only did this for science.

I think a big part of it is the bikini straps, they kind of attract the eye's attention and make her torso look a lot more weird than it really is at first glance.

I figured that because you made a comment about the Yotsuba style right after someone got through explaining why the term's probably invalid, that you were demonstrating a bit of tongue in cheeck humour, so I thought I'd demonstrate a bit of the same, while reprimanding you slightly for a somewhat stupid comment.

Eah! Because here is I`am - Tomo The Wise!!!

  No.195220

I received my copy from Yesasia today and did another comparision with the old editions.
This new vol.2 covers from page 53 of the old vol.2 through page 126 of the old vol.3

The 4 color pinups from the front of the old vol.3 are gone.

The Osaka has hiccups("Osaka's half Day") story has 4 pages redrawn.

Of the 22 pinups from the beginning of new chapters, 16 have been replaced.

The story "A day in the life of Chiyo-chan" has 5 of the 15 pages redrawn.

The 7 strips from when Mr. Kimura was at the swimming pool has 3/4 of the panels redrawn.

There are also an additional 60+ panels redawn, mostly in the first half. This doesn't include other panels where noses, eyes and cheekbones were altered.

The 2nd new chapter from Shonen Sunday is included at the end of this volume.

I like the new... not pinups, but the large character drawings at the start of each segment. There's a really beautiful one of Osaka right at the beginning.
Also, a slightly scary one of Yukari a little further in (she's wearing a tiny little skull necklace).

I'll scan these later, but the first and last redrawn pages of the Chiyo's Day segment are adorable.

I found this stuffed in the middle. Azumanga color prints included with the September issue of Monthly Sunday? I'm having a hard time figuring out how you're supposed to get them actually...

I can't make out some of the fine print at the bottom, but in main, it looks like you have to send in a pre-set money order for 1000 yen for the set. (Some money-order circumstances require an additional 100-yen fee for a total of 1100 yen, but I can't tell exactly why. A couple of the kanji on that line are too fuzzy for me to read at that resolution.) I'm guessing the mailing address and such are on the reverse of that flyer.

Besides the completely redrawn Kagura, there are some dialogue changes here as well. I particularly liked where Tomo starts to blush.
1.
Kagura: "Alright!"
Kagura: "It's you and me Sakaki!"
Kagura: "I'm gonna win today!"
Tomo: "What a competition nut."

Kagura: "What's that you bouncy nut?"
Tomo: "Bouncy!?"
Kagura: "Because your hair's all light and bouncy."
Tomo: "Wh-"

Tomo: "Are you trying to compliment me or insult me? Make up your mind!"
Kagura: "What!?"

Tomo: "Anyway, this nut is the problem."
Kagura: "You got the hiccups Osaka? That really is nutty."

The dialogue is the same here as well, but I wanted to use this as an example of something I've noticed a strong trend of in the revised editions.
Azuma has pretty much done away with all instances of deformed characters. In the original volume 1 there was an SD version of each character about every 20th page or so, but those were all removed. Here you can see Nyamo has been redrawn in a much more realistic style. He still exaggerates some features, but not nearly as much as he did in the past.

The bottom right here is another good example of an intentionally deformed looking drawing being swapped out for a more realistic one.

The dialogue here is different as well.

Tomo: "Chiyo, are you alright!?"
Chiyo: "I was alright..."

Kagura: "Be more careful."
Kagura: "Chiyo's legs can't reach the bottom, so it would be easy for her to die."

Osaka: "But if that happened"
Osaka: "Her head floats would deploy!"
Yomi: "She doesn't have those."

Chiyo: "I hope I grow up fast..." (And learn how to swim fast too...)

The new pages are pretty grand. I rather like Kagura's confused compliment/insult of Tomo, and that it made her blush.

Seeing the redone versions of the pages where Azuma didn't use the 4koma format reminded me that my only disappointment with the new pages is that we didn't get another one of those.
Still, that really would've been pushing our luck.
