Azuma and photo references. I bet he uses a lot of them, including photos of people he uses for the main characters standing around. Notice how a lot if the people are standing at an angle as if somebody is taking a photo of them from close by.
case in point: the perfect drawing of Fuuka's perfect behind

The backgrounds are really amazing in Yotsuba, especially in the later books. It's very hard to create such perfect images with the feeling of sunlight, a rainy day, typhoon, the play of light in the trees with only ink. Wish I had assistants like that.

Azuma is a vc: rishuve ("rice head" with a bit of slangy pronunciation in Swedish)

naw, not hard really, especially if you use photo references. I remember how impressed I was when back in 1986 I saw my first manga: Appleseed by Shirow and he had a drawing of trees branches and their shadows on the sidewalk, simular to what Azuma is doing. Of course the Europeans have been doing this stuff for decades too. Americans well, they are stuck doing Batman and X men. Now they just do them in Photoshop and they still sux.

  No.208057   Report

It's still pretty hard, and most importantly, takes a lot of time.

You are either incredibly ignorant or a very successful troll. I'm so angry I can barely type.

Well, they also do "high art" like Ren and Stimpy, Powerpuff Girls, or Family Guy. That's quality artwork right there!

Oh, and I suppose there's the current batch of politically correct, sterile, CG coming from Pixar.

well ok, i'll admit i was trolling and I was successful. Americans got great art: all the Zap guys: Robert Crumb, Wilson, Spain, Paul Pope, Richard Corben, Phoebe Gloeckner, Renee Frech, Linda Barry, Los Bros hernandez, Dori Seda.
Now tell me honestly, have you even heard of even ONE of them??

I'll admit I'm not familiar with Paul Pope or Renee Frech. I'm well acquainted with the rest of them. I also know of a great artist named Renee FRENCH. I would put Jim Woodring up with those folks as well.

Read some Crumb from my father's collection. While I'm not a fan of that genre of comic to recognize more of the artists, I at least know it should be a sin to mention Crumb but not Shelton.
I've loved every bit of Pope's work I can get my hands on, with Heavy Liquid being my most recent favoirite.
I should know Richard Corben from the Den stories printed in Heavy Metal (which has been suprising me some decent stuff recently), but I didn't know him by name and required wikipedia to tell me I've read him at all.
I am not familiar with the work of the others you've mentioned, but I must say there seems to be neglect for certain mainstream artists like Will Eisner and Hal Foster. Hell, are you trying to claim Gil Kane, Wally Wood and Dave Cockrum couldn't draw because of the genre they found employment in?
For generic recommendations Black Hole was pretty neat, and Requiem: Chevalier Vampire Knight is the best thing HM's printing these days.

Jim Davis is brilliant, and frankly, the only comic writer that matters in this generation.

Paul Pope spent a year at Kodansha...which is more than many Japanese artists ever manage to do. Rich Corben's also been doing some cool Hellboy stories lately.

Man, I go to a Western comics image board and their hatred for 'animu' borders on bigotry.

Go to a Japanese manga image board and find the same contempt for the other.

I just don't get it.
