I was about to make a "which translation do you guys prefer" thread, but I guess this is close enough to that.

I spent today marathoning 1-4 of ADV and 1-4 of Yen Press back to back. I'd alternate between them as I worked my way through.

Yen Press tries to keep a lot of stuff closer to the original, ADV usually cuts out stuff they don't think the western audience would understand.

I personally like stuff kept to the original, but I can say that some lines had better wording in the ADV version.

Also, Yen Press really does a nice job in making Yotsuba actually sounding like a kid. I'm not sure if ADV was scared of making her make grammatical mistakes (in case people get on their ass about unprofessional work or something), but sometimes Yotsuba sounds way too...stiff? I guess that's the word I'm looking for. She comes off sounding like every other character at times.

In the original, she doesn't even use kanji in her speech. I kinda liked that effect that the original had, even if it was small. ADV seemed to like the thought of translating her "properly".

So, how would that come across in an English translation? The improper grammar use? I just like her sounding like what you'd you expect a "kid" to sound like. Not some air-head, bratty in an asshole way some (most?) kids are today.
I know there used to be one regular here who couldn't stand Yots, but she's reasonable compared to kids her age I meet that tell me to 'fuck off'.

I liked how she said that her favorite joke was the "two fat legs" one. I love that joke too. And she's completely right, Fuuka should have responded by strangling Yotsuba the same way Naoko Akagi strangled Rei.

I've noticed Yen Press seems to want to Japanify their manga as much as possible (what with the literal translation of sound effects and leaving words like 'nee-san' untouched).
When it comes to their non-manga releases though, they do a much better job of trying to make things accessible to a broader audience.

A perfect example is the Haruhi Suzumiya series. I'm pretty sure they used the same translator for both the manga and the novels, but there's a ridiculous amount of weeaboo-ish stuff they left untouched in the manga, while doing a more professional job of localizing it in the novels.

They're trying to market the novels to a wider audience so that they don't die. Light novels usually die before they reach their end here in the US. They also changed the Spice and Wolf covers to look like Twilight or something. Not that it matters, because the book is just going to be displayed in the manga section of the bookstore anyway.

I remember being so excited when Chapters started carrying manga in the comics section. Then manga took up most of the comics section. Now there's three full stacks of manga section and the single shelf of comics they still carry is tucked away in an obscure corner of the sci-fi. It makes me sad.
