I use YYYYMMDD and don't split them up into folders? Why? because I don't want the folders. I'd personally prefer to use a date format that is sorted in a natural way then force myself to do things that I may not otherwise do just to make sure they sort properly. There's quite a few things that you would want stored dated, but actual year distinctions don't warrant another folder (especially when last year is only a few weeks ago).

Back to date formats for a moment: I'm surprised no one mentioned that since today is 12/12/12 (for some of us yet, anyway), the dates of files created today will appear the same regardless of how individual users have dates formatted on their PCs, etc. (well, as long as they're using 2-digit years...)
