  No.209286   Report

When I first saw this page I laughed for about 2 seconds, until I looked at the bottom and actually gasped out loud.

1.
Asagi: "You can borrow it, just bring it back here, alright?"
Yotsuba: "FOR REAL?!"
Asagi: "For real."

2.
Yotsuba: "Fuuka said she uses this to lose weight."
Asagi: "Don't worry, that girl won't ever lose any weight."
Yotsuba: "FOR REAL?!"

Comments: "She starts playing with it right away..."

>>209283
1.
Yotsuba: "Where are we going?"
2.
Yotsuba: "There's a big block. What is that?"
Koiwai: "That's a gravestone."
4.
Yotsuba: "...Where are we going?" (she's speaking with kanji?)
5.
Yotsuba: "WAAAHHHHH!!!"
Yostuba: "AAAAAAHHHHH!!!"

Comments: "The place where she was taken is"

Comments from the blog entry:
"Yotsuba, who broke a tea cup with the ball, lies to Daddy saying she wasn't the one who did it."
"Daddy takes Yotsuba to a certain place."
"That place is..."
"The conclusion is in the magazine (laugh)"

As I understand from listening to subbed anime and Japanese live action for quite a few years, hontouni is usually translated as "really" not "for real."

  No.209292   Report

That's nice.

Okay, so a broken window and lying equals an ass whooping, so I'd estimate that a broken plate and lying equates to a bitch slap?

"For real" strikes me as a colloquial slang phrase that not every person would use, only certain groups of close friends in certain areas of the U.S or the world (something like that).

"Really" seems to me to be more of a catch-all phrase that everyone uses.

That's what I think.

  No.209304   Report

>>209303
Yeah, "for real?" does sound kinda younger than "really?", sort of like the Dad/Daddy distinction for Yotsuba. I guess it's one of those things that depends on the translator preference/situation. I think Yotsuba would say "for real?" though.

America ruined English and ruined manga and ruined everything.

  No.209308   Report

>>209304
That's precisely why I chose "For real" instead of "Really" (besides also trying to be a little original).
It sounded more like something a 5 year old would say. Since some of the childish idiosyncrasies of Yotsuba's speech are untranslateable, one option is to make subtle changes elsewhere to give her dialogue a more childlike feel. That's kind of how the Yen Press editions are doing it.

Kinda lame of them to give away a surprise that happens on the last few pages. Not a big deal, but I would have enjoyed the chapter a bit more if I hadn't seen it, i think.

  No.210250   Report

I wouldn't mind seeing it put behind a spoiler image.

Again, it's not a big deal or anything, but since it's not like I have to be sold on the issue, and since they only come out a few days before the publication, anyway, I'd rather read the chapter without having seen the preview material. Especially with chapters like this where the "preview" is more or less the end of the chapter.

  No.211022   Report

My apologies for taking so long, this chapter is pretty easy overall, but there's one bit of dialogue on page 6 that was really kicking my ass.
I don't know if any of you have tried translating anything, but it's one of those things where the dialogue itself is really simple, and I know what all of the words mean, but understanding what they mean in their particular context is really hard to grasp for whatever reason.

Anyway, I don't feel confident that I got it correct, but I'm at least in the ballpark, so after already spending too much time on something so trivial, I decided to just call it good and move on.
I should be done shortly.
