If you'll notice, it's the time of year when kids have summer vacation.
Well, for August, my special summer vacation plans are to have an updating party as far as possible.
Is "as far as possible" an idiom?
What I mean is, I'll update as much as I can.

I saw "Arrietty" the other day.
For a while I wanted to fire an X-slash at the old woman voiced by Kirin Kiki like Yotsuba did at Yanda, but it was still really interesting.
I'm really interested in what the rest of the world thinks about these sorts of whimsical feeling Ghibli films.
translator's note: なんでもない感じ = 'whimsical'?

By the way, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are some of my favorite Ghibli films.
Like the part where Ashitaka says "I'm taking this girl!" and then just picks up San and carries her off, I think is really cool.

I have a growing list of unanswered questions, so I need to address those.

I often post pictures here, and I'll get asked "What kind of camera do you use?"

My camera is a Canon EOS 5D mark II.
Prior to this camera, I used a previous generation 5D, and when the mark II came out, I thought "Who needs a video function?" but the movies I take with this are actually really interesting.
It's become a new hobby for me.

Recently I've been using a Zeiss Voigtlander manual focus lens with my EOS.
The depth of field scale is calibrated perfectly.
It's made of metal, so it's heavy.
Using an autofocus has got nothing on the sensation of turning a focus ring.

The auto focus has few disadvantages and is very convenient, but since photography is just a passtime for me, it would have been alright even if it had been a mistake.
Finding the focus point is a lot of fun.

I've taken on another assistant.
One of my current assistant's friends has been saying he wants to work here, so I had him show me some drawings.
I thought "This guy's got real potential" so I brought him on.

Now that I've taken on another person, I have to get another one of everything.
A desk, and a chair, a computer. A trace table and Photoshop too.
Shopping is fun though.

For the purposes of physical aesthetics, everyone's equipment is essentially the same.
It bothers me though, when I can't find a match due to frequent model changes or something.
There weren't any desks that were a matching color, so I ended up with one that's a slightly different color.

My new tablet arrived today.
It's an intuos4 L.
I was surprised at just how large the box it came in was.
I'll be using the new one myself, and the one I've been using up to this point will get handed down to my assistant.

I keep saying "I'll discuss the tankoubons in this space," and I realized that I haven't covered volume 8 or volume 9.
So, I'll begin by discussing volume 8.
Finally...

First, the cover.
The cover is the festival.
All of the portable shrines have gathered at the main shrine, but it's impossible for little Yotsuba to see anything through the crowd of people.
And so at this point, Daddy lifts her up onto his shoulders.
She noisily shouts something like "That way, full speed ahead!" Because she's joyfully slapping him on the head, Daddy is making a questionable face.
As a side note, Fuuka is behind them.
Not very... heroine?-like the way she was left out.
As far as I know, Ena is down there below them too.

"Yotsuba & Opposites"
The "What's for lunch?" "Chinese fried rice." (chaa han) scene.
In the serialized version it was "Fried rice." (yaki meshi)
Afterwards, I was told that yaki meshi is Kansai dialect, so I corrected it to chaa han.
People from the Kansai region, please be aware of this.

"Yotsuba & The Restaurant"
Since Torako was playing with one, I bought a Rubik's Cube.
Around the time I drew this, I was able to solve all 6 sides in 3 minutes, but I've completely forgotten how now.

"Yotsuba and the Cultural Festival"
I've been to a number of cultural festivals too.
I've always wondered what makes them "Cultural."

As for the ones at schools, when you're a student you can go to more than you can possibly stand, but when you become an adult you're hardly able to get into them at all, so it was a lot of fun going to such a difficult to research place.

Fuuka's school is called Ajisai West High School, where 'sai' is written with the character for flower.
For the cultural festival though, 'sai' is written with the character for festival instead.
(translator's note: In the English version, this pun was written as 'Ajisai-lebration').

On page 63, where there are posters for all the clubs, my assistants and I each picked one to draw whatever we wanted.
For the record, the one that I drew was for the Animal Club.

It's this level of committment and attention to detail and realism that makes Yotsubato stand out as a series.

Vol. 8, part 2
http://azumakiyohiko.com/archives/2010/08/08_2217.php

"Yotsuba & The Typhoon"
Without using the sound effect "Zaaaa," I thought as I drew that I would draw something that had a "Zaaa" sort of feeling.
It took a really long time.
I wanted to really capture the mood, so I tried using a high pressure sprayer to wash my windows, but I didn't really know how.

"Yotsuba & House-sitting"
Wondering what would happen if you tried using water balloons inside, I tried doing that for real too.
I now know that it turns out very badly.

"Yotsuba & The Festival"
As I was drawing, I felt that I genuinely wanted to draw a festival.
What a nightmare.
It was hellaciously hard.

For research, I paid a visit to the local festival.
I was concerned, because for this kind of seasonal event, I would only be able to research at one time each year.
The scale of festivals has shrunk quite a bit since the time I was a kid.
I realized there are fewer children these days.

"Yotsuba & Acorns"
I tried making a huge serving of spaghetti with Tabasco like the one Yotsuba made.
Then I ate it.
You might say it was spicy, or you might say it was sour, or you might say it was excruciating.
What a horrible thing for Yotsuba to do, I thought.
But mysteriously, as I was eating it, I ended up not minding that much.

Draft Meeting
http://azumakiyohiko.com/archives/2010/08/09_2321.php
"I want to have a female character draft."
I held a draft meeting with with one of my assistants.

Azuma: "Alright, I pick Anna-chan (Wandering Son)"
assistant: "Amile-san (The Bride's Stories)"
A: "Wait, that's not fair. I was going to pick her."
a: "Not my problem."
A: "...Alright, I pick San (Princess Mononoke)"
a: "Fio (Porco Rosso)"
A: "Do you plan to keep picking the ones I want?"
a: "Well you said it was a draft."
A: "...Kane-yan (The Wandering of Girls' Pair No. 7)"
a: "I knew that was coming..."

Today was another peaceful day.

Note: "The Wandering of Girls' Pair No. 7" or "Dainana Joshikai Houkou" is a seemingly obscure (or maybe just new? It began running in September) manga that takes place in Japan in a technologically advanced near future. In this future, a Friendship Assignment System has been established in high schools, where people get paired up with a friend as part of their curriculum. The series follows a specific pairing, Pair No. 7, through their misadventures in daily life, with some sci-fi thrown in since it takes place in the future and all.
It sounds like an Odd Couple sort of thing.
Kane-yan (Machiko Kanemura) is the one with the dark hair.

Dignified Work
http://azumakiyohiko.com/archives/2010/08/21_0651.php
To go have a beer once I'm finished with work, that's the sort of dignified work style I long for.
I want to be able to do that, and to be able to work more efficiently.

But what I do is dignified in its own way too.

Right now, the amount of time it takes to draw things means pulling a lot of late nights at the office, so I'll wake up at 10am and go immediately to my desk.
Such is the dignity of my commute being a mere walk from the bedroom to the work room.

It isn't long before I start to get hungry and have breakfast.
After that, aside from lunch and dinner, I spend the entire time drawing.

Once in a while my back starts to hurt, so I'll roll around.
Being able to roll around at the office, during work, is definitely one of the more dignified points when compared to being an office worker.
Whenever I start to lose my motivation, I just read manga while rolling around.

And no matter what I'm doing, if I get tired or bored, I can just take an afternoon nap.
I set the kitchen timer for 10 minutes and then fall asleep.
I sprung for a Simmons matress in the office, so I'm always guaranteed a comfortable place to sleep.

The end of the day usually comes at around 3 or 4 oclock.
By that time, the neighborhood bars are already closed. Or rather, I want to hurry up and go to bed.
When I do have to stay late at the office, it's nice to be able to just go straight from there to my bedroom and immediately go to sleep.

Not getting any more than about 2 pages done per day isn't very dignified though.

So, because this is the time of the year that Yotsubato is set, much research must be done, thus the time of the year relative to the time in Yotsubato is directly related to how much research must be done.

Yes, but he used the English word "appeal" in his post, so I tried to retain it.

As UNIQLO and Rakuten have made English their official language, I thought 'Why not make Ika-Musume-nese our company's official language geso?'
To start, beginning with the second edition of Yotsubato! Volume 1, we're going to try to change the blurb on the jacket to "As always, today is the most enjoyable Marine Day".
No, we are doing it degeso.

Ika-musume (Squid Girl) is a manga based anime that began airing last month.
The highlights from episode 1:

Ah, I wasn't sure you were going to get that reference.
Then again, the show has hint of Azuma-ness

I heard of Ika-Musume just a few days ago, so I figured de-geso was her catch phrase or something. It was easy to find when I tried to look it up.

Fun trivia for everyone else, de-geso is a play on words. In the old days, men used to end their sentences with de-gesu which meant "as a humble person" (and I believe eventually evolved into desu).
Geso on the other hand means "tentacle".

There was also a pun in >>212231 similar to the episode titles of Ika-Musume (they all end with janaika? which means "isn't it?" but the ika is emphasized since it also means "squid").

So, is the series any good or is it just cash-in on the takohair fad ?

Not sure, I've never seen it myself (aside from what's in >>212232).

It's fun fluff. I enjoy it while I'm watching it, but an hour later I don't remember what it was about.

I'm watching it with great interest. Ika is kind of Yotsuba-like, and it also has a Kanamemo meets Sgt. Frog vibe.

That makes so much sense as they're both orphans with weird hair who came out of nowhere.

well, Ika comes from the sea. Yots is from "the left".
