Satoshi Kon is dead.

  No.210856   Report

It's sad, really. He wasn't even old.

But life goes on, I guess...

  No.210857   Report

It freaking sucks. Why couldn't it be Miyazaki? His best years are behind him. But no telling what heights Kon could've reached.

Oh shit, I loved Millenium Actress.

Anytime anyone dies, I think to myself, "why couldn't it be Miyazaki?" too.

There's a translation of his last blog entry up, when he knew that he didn't have long: http://makikoitoh.com/journal/satoshi-kons-last-words

I still have to see Paprika, but it's a little strange knowing that there won't be anything animated left to watch afterwards -- it's hard to believe Perfect Blue was his first directing gig, it just seems so relatively recent. Definitely going to use the Paprika viewing to introduce a friend to Kon whom I think is really going to enjoy his work.

Paprika was such overrated tripe. Sorry, I don't mean it's a poorly made film, but it's nowhere near the levels Satoshi was able to take it, and not the deserving of praise as many give it. It just came off as psychobabble, through-and-through, it's the same thing with the original Ghost in the Shell.

Paranoia Agent, while less coherent at parts, is a much more well-rounded piece of work.

I'd heard the story was its weak department, but said friend does enjoy visual/technical spectacle, which Paprika looked like it had in spades. We're also planning to watch it the same weekend as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which I haven't seen but friend has, and which I've heard has a similar sensibility, at least in terms of surreality.

I've suggested Paranoia Agent to some other folks, but that's been more difficult for people to get into (whether from strangeness, initial slowness, or just TV series vs. one-time sit-down movie).
