To bring out the shading duplicate the original image twice, desaturate 'em, set one to "Multiply" and one to either "Screen" or "Soft light" and apply them to the same layer mask as skin colour. That should bring out the shadows nicely.

It took me a while to figure out masks. I had just been painting the coloring directly.

Using a desaturated multiply layer didn't look like, but using a duplicated multiply layer without desaturation brought out the shading. Applying this to the entire image rather than just the colored area seems to work pretty well to, because it makes colors more vivid and darker, which seems to match the darkened skin better. Only multiplying the skin still works with images that are already dark.
