I've put off mentioning this long enough--any of you jokers heard of Bunny Drop (Usagi Drop in Japanese)? I think of it as a serious take on the Yotsuba story, from Koiwai's perspective. It's been out for a year or so in English, but I just learned that the live-action adaptation opens in August, and the subbed anime version will be available to watch from Crunchyroll tomorrow (July 7th).

I saw the english manga for sale at a bookstore a few months ago. I flipped through it, it looked alright. I have enough series in my life, and it didn't jump out at me as being really a must-read. I might give it a chance someday if I'm bored.

Hey, I didn't know they were making a movie. Kenichi Matsuyama? Nice.

Someone mentioned the anime in >>215854.

Avidly read the series. Rin will just steal your heart, but I wish Daikichi could be a little more mature and confident.

I read the series up until the big storytelling change (won't spoil it, though it's not a big deal), and then I saw some of the untranslated chapters after that. I really liked what I read.

The way the OP compares it Yotsubato works well. We might not see Koiwai struggling to figure out how to make ends meet or calling his mother for advice on what to do, but we can probably assume he would have to do that from time to time. Usagi Drop shows us those kinds of moments, and does it well. It's interesting to watch the parental relationship build, especially with the scenes of how difficult building that relationship really is. It's got a good mix of realism mixed with comic book melodrama and, of course, lots of cuteness.

I hadn't heard about the anime adaptation, so thanks for mentioning it here! I'll definitely be checking it out.

I just saw the anime, and it really didn't click with Yotsuba and Koiwai to me at all. It was really good and I'll likely watch the entire season, so don't get me fucking wrong, but the pairings quite different.

I think the key part of the OP's description was "a more serious take on the Yotsuba story." It takes a similar set up and focuses as much on the struggles that it would bring as much as the little joys.

Plus, I'd say the two get a bit more similar (though, again, they're far from the same thing) as time goes on. The characters start to warm up to each other and relax a bit, as you'd expect, which makes things a little different in tone from when they first meet at a funeral.

I really liked it for the first several volumes in which Rin was incredibly cute and there was much more humor, but I've been really losing interest since everything got all "teenage drama" crap...

I didn't know there was an anime version though. I might have to check that out.

I got spoiled about the ending and now I've lost all interest in the series.

First 25 chapters of the manga were good...and then it made a giant turn for the shit.

SPOILERS!

Typically unimaginative Japanese teen romance manga garbage, complete with childhood friends, stupid best friends, borderline tsundere female lead, incestuous crushes, and giant age gaps. Blegh. Suck it, Japan.

END SPOILERS!

Hopefully, the anime will only focus on the first 25 chapters.

I feel that the 2nd half of UD is a pretty good example of its type, and I don't have any real problems with it. It's just that the 1st half was terrific and unique (whereas there are many examples of the 2nd half's type).

I think that many of those who appreciate Yotsuba would find Usagi Drop (at least the 1st half) to be worthwhile as well.

I don't see the anime getting past the storyline change, unless it goes more than a single cour. Even two cours probably wouldn't be enough.

"Cour"?

This, it was a good read, well made, then it turned into a run of the mill shoujo with no one being happy with love.

"Cour" is the Japanese unit of TV production, which corresponds to about 13 weeks (one calendar season) worth of shows. They use that to avoid confusion with "season" which usually refers to the traditional American TV production units of September-to-May broadcasts with reruns.

So AzuDai ran for 2 cours, 26 eps. Most shows aimed at kids that run on Sundays or are "clock shows" airing before school run 4 cours.

Hayate no Gotoku was unusual in that it's first batch of shows ran on Sundays for 4 cours. Then it's 2nd run was for 2 cours at late-night. When the 3rd season comes it will probably be for 1 or 2 cours at late-night again.

tl;dr "cour" equals 13 weeks

Ah. Never heard of that before, but cool to know.
I know some series run for odd numbers, like 24 episodes and 10, but I guess the concept behind core puts that into a better perspective.

10-ep series are rare, and usually due to odd airing schedules. For example, Moshidora ran on 10 consecutive weeknights on NHK's main channel as "event" programming - that channel hadn't run any anime at all in years.

All info I've been able to find about the UD anime so far says it will run for 1 cour, so it won't get past the story change.

If it's a TV anime then the episode count will usually be a multiple of 13 (13, 26, 52, etc.)

On the other hand, if you're talking about OVAs then there could be any number of episodes
