I've actually been looking for that ever since it was first posted here about two years ago. It wasn't just the clothes, either; they redid the money Chiyo held up in the Okinawa trip - actually there were a few things altered in the that episode. I'm wondering if they actually went to Okinawa at all in the Korean version.

Have you guys seen the German version of Azu? (Just look for "Azumanga Daioh Folge" on youtube). I wouldn't have thought German and moe go together, but it sounds good. I wonder what region of Germany they use for Osaka's accent.

Someone pointed out to me the other day that you see more Chinese characters in anime than Koreans, even though Korea has stronger links to Japan (Japan fought wars with and occupied both countries, so past hostility can't be the reason alone). Come to think of it, I can't name a single Korean character in anime off the top of my head.

Funny enough, some anime series are actually made in Korea.
Japan and Korea have always had an intense history together, but even now it's interesting. Some high ranking yakuza clans are made of Koreans, even operated by a Korean leader. Makes sense seeing how back in the day Koreans were outcasted and some were lead into these clans. I know Korean drama TV is hot shit now with some people in Japan, but to say things are better now... I guess.

What really took me by surprised by even the concept of it is that Koreans who, iirc, defected from North Korea have their own school in Japan who fallow the same system as a school in North Korea would fallow. Like, they have a picture of the "Dear Leader" and salute him every class session. I think the actual students are children of the defects from the war, but these kids are still damn isolated like the ones where their ancestors are from.

Something a little similar happened in America during the Cold War. Many Eastern European ethnic communities got split over whether the new communist governments; some felt "it's still my old country, no matter who's running it," whereas others supported anti-communist movements. I don't know if Eastern European communities in America went as far as those North Koreans in Japan, to take part in cult-of-personality movements like those Tito, Hoxha and Ceausescu had.

I like how they didn't just replace the "brake for cats" sign, they actually seem to have made it bilingual. So I guess they do go to Okinawa in the Korean version (granted, for all I know, it's also possible there's a part of Korea that's very Jap-touristy despite being out in the sticks), but I like to imagine Koreans now go to Iriomote and are dismayed to find Korean actually isn't spoken there.

And what's with the way they just removed Chiyo's obi like that? Does it look more like a Korean dress that way?

I can understand maybe translating signs, but changing money and dress? There's no way the Korean audience wouldn't know that the original characters and show were Japanese. Even if they didn't pick it up from the cues in the show (which seems unlikely), you can't hide that kind of thing in the age of the internet. So why bother?

(And are we sure they really did make these changes? It would have been simple just to alter some still pics and claim those changes were made as a gag. Has anyone seen those actual episodes in Korean?)

I think there are a few episodes on YouTube in Korean, haven't looked myself though.

Maybe they geared this more towards kids? Like, what 4Kids did with One Piece, for some reason.

My guess is that Azumanga was actually shown on mainstream Korean TV rather than just to the anime fans, hence the need to localize.

Brings up the question, what was the show called in Korea? Wasn't translated in America cause only anime fans were gonna see it and they don't care if you translate the title, but if it was shown on mainstream Korean television does that mean they actually called it " Great King Azumanga"?
In that case translating it would make even less sense.

The one thing tht gets me is the actual Azumanga logo, it isn't translated at all. So I find it kind of strange that everyhing in those comparison pics would be. I also watched the korean episode 25 I have and saw none of that (it is possible I have a different video file, but I haven't even seen proof of the existance of the other one)
