In this one they're playing Karuta, a traditional New Year's card matching game. There are several varieties, but the gist of it is that one person draws from a deck that has a letter or clue, and everyone else playing tries to find the card with the matching image or phrase from a separate set spread out on the ground.

I'll post this here since this appears to be the thread for randomness and movie discussions: I just watched House (aka Hausu), a surreal 1977 film I'm surprised hasn't been discussed here yet, since it features a group of schoolgirls and a couple of them kind of correspond to Azumanga characters (the movie is like a trip to Chiyo's summer house as it would happen in Osaka's dreams). It's kind of cheesy, but visually inventive (and I'm sure it was an influence on the Evil Dead movies); recommended for those with an interest in Japanese movies, or just unusual films in general.
