I just saw this got an American release last month. I wasn't even aware there was already another Ghibli film after Arrietty.

Is it any good? It's showing at the local art house theater, but I'll probably wait for the DVD. I tend to not like the non-fantasy ones as much.

Finally rented this on DVD this weekend.
Pretty good. Similar to Whisper of the Heart, except the girl isn't as whiny or stupid, which made it more enjoyable.

A review I read said the story becomes more wild and improbable as the movie progresses and is hard to suspend belief; but no, i havent personally seen it, just reporting what somebody else said.

Eh, it has one major soap-opera like twist near the middle, but I didn't think it was that improbable the way it was presented.

I like the more reality-based Ghibli films rather than the fantasy ones. I feel the latter goes completely over my head since there seems to be some ties to Japanese folklore and such.

Films like Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart are just really good films. Kind of pisssed those get overlooked from Miyazaki's stuff lol.

I didn't like Whisper of the Heart, but mainly just because of the obnoxious "OMG everything is the end of the world" teenage romance plot.

My Neighbor Totoro is one of my favorites, and I wouldn't mind seeing more in that vein even without the fantasy elements.

Only Yesterday sounds interesting from the plot synopsis on Wikipedia, but it says an English version hasn't ever been released.

Maybe not on DVD, but AMC aired an English sub of Only Yesterday (and other Ghibli films) when Ponyo was in theaters, iirc.
I think the UK got a DVD? They seem to get better treatment in that region with regards to Ghibli films.

> Goro Miyazaki

Kiki, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke will always be my favorite Miyazaki flicks. There are other good ones, but those three are the masterpieces.

^Damn. I heard Tales from Earthsea was garbage, but Poppy Hill, too?
I kind of want to see them both now.

Looking forward to the blue ray rip. Some us aren't lucky enough to see it in theaters
