53153 No.226374     Report

There was some news today I thought would be of interest to /azu/.
In Nagasaki Prefecture's Tsushima City a man called to a wildlife health center, asking them to treat his sick Tsushima Cat. The center sent someone around who treated the cat, but it passed away nine hours later. It was a female, 15-16 years old, and appears to have died of old age. As Tsushima Cats are wild animals and protected by law as a Natural Monument, it is a crime to keep one privately (and has almost never happened), and the man was questioned about it. He said he found the cat as a kitten injured on a road 15 years ago, had it treated at a vet and took it in. Because he had no ill-intent he is not to be prosecuted. http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20131024/k10015531141000.html

Now, anyone on /azu/ should be thinking one thing at this point, and you wouldn't be the only ones. On Twitter, a search for the headline + 榊 brings up a bunch of tweets, the key theme of which is リアル榊さん, Real Sakaki-san (others included Yamamaya, Yamapikarya, and the observation that 15 years ago is about right for the scene in Azumanga). http://realtime.search.yahoo.co.jp/search?p=%E7%B5%B6%E6%BB%85%E5%8D%B1%E6%83%A7%E3%81%AE%E7%8C%AB%E3%80%80%E6%A6%8A&ei=UTF-8

The Tsushima Cat is a close genetic relative of the Iriomote Cat and looks similar too.

Maybe Azuma knew this guy and based Sakaki's story on his.

It always sucks when pets die. Imagine the horror Sakaki goes trough when Maya dies. Poor girl.

  No.226380   Report

I think that goes for many animal lovers. I have a distant aunt who broke down on the highway after her dog died. It was so bad that even the cop let her go after she calmed down.
She even cried again at Thanksgiving that same year.

I just got baby shih tzu. I've owned a varieties of animals, but this one turned me into a dog lover. I don't think I'll break down that badly when he dies, but who know?

It doesn't really look that much bigger to me.
Besides, Kagura could have a larger cup size while Sakaki has a larger bust measurement.

I was more surprised they drew Yomi with a cameltoe in this part of the intro.

I like the revised punchline in the first one.

Original:
"If dogs doggy paddle, what do cats do?"
"Cats can't even swim, can they?"
Sakaki: blub-blub

Revised:
"If dogs doggy paddle, what do cats do?"
"Cats would drown, right?"
Sakaki: horror

They included the supplemental chapters that were released in Gekkan magazine during the summer of 2009, as well as several redrawn pages in the existing chapters. Most notable are the full page character images at the start of each chapter which were nearly all redrawn/replaced (as in, not a new version of the old drawing, but something completely different).

Thanks. I see that there are three volumes there, in contrast to the four volumes in English (I always thought that was strange, given that it covered three years...). re those three volumes the entirety?

  No.227103   Report

>>227102
Yes, the chapters were reorganized in the revised editions so that one volume covers one school year. So the entire series is contained within those three volumes.

It's funny, we just had someone else here a few months ago asking when the 4th volume from the revised editions was finally going to come out...

You know, when I originally watched/read the series I don't think I really understood that this scene was supposed to be Kaorin seeing Sakaki's panties. It wasn't until I started seeing fan art like this that I made the connection.

Also noteworthy is that in the revised editions, Azuma changed the design on Sakaki's underwear from the now iconic cat and two paws to this.
Also, it's more obvious that we're looking at her underwear.

Azuma's one and only pantyshot (not counting all the X-rated stuff he did in his early years).

So my copies of the revised Azumanga came today (thanks, Ralen, for pointing me to them), and not only is stuff redrawn, there seems to be added material. Either via new panels or maybe through a reordering of text with new panels underneath, but there's definitely new material.

Ralen, have you ever done scans and translations of that stuff and I just missed it years back?

It'd be great if I could read Japanese; I could check things out myself. Maybe I can learn a little now, having both versions.

  No.227229   Report

>>227228
I may have scanned one or two new pages that stood out to me (in particular I remember one new page where Sakaki was trying to pet a "boss" cat lounging on a wall in her neighborhood) but I never did anything thorough. In fact I don't recall if I've ever even looked all the way through the revised editions... I think I mainly just skimmed them.

  No.227268   Report

>>227229
From reading through them today, it looks like not only were 50 to 75% of the comics totally redone (with some single panel redraws thrown in on old ones, too), but most of the hero shots of the girls at chapter starts were redone and some lines have been changed.

Add in the fact that the supplemental stuff is placed inline and this was a great purchase.

Yeah, those are all from the revised volume 3. Specifically they're all from the chapter where Maya comes to Sakaki's rescue from the gang of cats.
Sakaki's dialogue gets a bit of a makeover.

"Chiyo-chan, when they're all going to town biting me, use that chance to escape"
"Going to town biting you?!"

"...One day he'll stand tall on the peak of Iriomote Island, you'll see."
