If that is Azuma's drawing setup I'm looking closely at those blue pencils with the black ends. Are those Staedtler Mars Lumographs? Those are my favorite pencils to draw with. Hard to buy locally but well worth getting.

Pretty close to what I pictured his work station to look like.
I wonder if he has given any thought into those digital drawing pads.

  No.223402   Report

When I first began seeing mangakas at work in pictures or in illustrations I noticed many work off lightboards. Normally I would use a lightboard when tracing or doing animation. But some even ink straight on them.

  No.223403   Report

>>223402
Drawing off a sloped surface feels pretty good. Chances are, they built a habit of leaning on the lightboard like I do.

  No.223404   Report

I love inking off of a lightboard, because you don't have to erase and you don't smear the ink with your eraser.

  No.223407   Report

>>223400
In >>221769 he talks about using an Intuos tablet.

I also remember him discussing his lightboard at one point, but I can't find it now. He was theorizing that if he got an LED TV, he could use it as a lightboard, and also watch TV while he drew.

@azumakiyohiko That's right. It's just 2900 hours on February 5th.

I think there's something wrong with the post times that get shown on Azuma's twitter page... I've been converting all the posted times to Japan time, but it looks like even the posted times are showing as an hour earlier than they really are, so my conversions are off too.

In which case he should get a Wacom Cintiq. Though they are very expensive.

I hardly use my lightboard anymore since I went digital with my inking.

@azumakiyohiko
Thanks for the eyewitness reports on strap Yotsuba. Due to the lack of any sort of monopoly on these, what's in stock will vary by store, so I can't really say personally. Lots of people have seen them at various convenience stores. Also at stores like Animate and Volks. Some are also saying Don Quijote and Village Vanguard or Sofmap and Yodobashi. I think bookstores occasionally have them too.

Oh god, that's terrible. That's worse than Bill Clinton's twitter handle being "@PrezBillyJeff."

Just so everyone knows, here's the etymology of that handle.
yo = 4 (as in 4 leaf clover)
tsu = 2 (because it sounds like "two")
ba = 8

So 428and = "Yotsuba &."

This new twitter account is apparently for information on Yotsuba& related merchandise like the Danbo figures.

Well, it was opened for the 10th anniversary of the daily calendar back in 2011, so it's affiliated with Yotsuba, but really I think it's more of Mr. Satomi's twitter, so while he knows about merchandising, he may not know much about what's going on with the series itself.

I've been spending a lot of time playing with the iPhone's 500 Color Camera app. So far I've only collected 54 colors. pic.twitter.com/5gGpWRAnDI
9:10 PM May 5th

The 500 Color Camera app is an iPhone app created by Felissimo to tie in to their 500 color pencils. http://www.felissimo.co.jp/global/

Apparently the app lets you take a picture of something, it will determine the predominant color in the image, and then identify its corresponding match from the 500 color pencil line. You can create your own catalogue of reference photos for each color, upload them, share with friends, etc.

This particular photo, of what I can only assume is Azuma's palm, has registered as the color "Alpaca Sweater."

Alpaca Sweater
Keywords: Pure of heart; Incurable dreamers
People who like this color are pure of heart, are always looking for the fun in things, and continually think of their loved ones.
They maintain warm relationships with strangers.
On occassion, they can be incurable dreamers.

Today's discussion is how to tell if Mr. Azuma's autograph is legit.

If anyone can get to the Yahoo! Auctions page (assuming it's still up) I'd be curious to see what the forgery looks like.

@azumakiyohiko
The question was, "Your autograph is up on Yahoo! Auctions, but is it authentic?" I checked it out. Oooh, it looks pretty good, but it's a fake. Here's an easy way you can tell: My autograph will always say "To so-and-so," with the recipient's name. Even The Tokyo Institute of Art Research (mysteriously) didn't catch that.

The word Azuma used for "urethane foam" was literally the English "Urethane sponge." I was imagining him eccentrically taping kitchen sponges to his ceiling for some reason. Those square papercraft figures have been getting popular the last year. Some are even made in plastic. I've mostly seen them with Hatsune Miku, the Madoka cast and other popular characters, but there are all sorts, all made in the same style. The paper versions are the most common.

Like the guys over at Red Letter Media said, it was like a really, really, really, really, really well done Asylum movie. Like if a made for TV SyFy channel movie had a blockbuster budget and the acting talent of your average major network sitcom.

  No.225300   Report

^I've read through dozens of reviews (mainly to see why it did so poorly in the U.S.), and that is the most apt way to describe it.
Although, Asylum already did a very poor rip off of Pacific Rim already.
http://youtu.be/4QqGQMUWKIM

Funny enough, though, World War Z even did better than Pacific Rim (each premiered there within a week, iirc), despite how much Japanese directors have endorsed the film.
WTF, Japan?

  No.225301   Report

>>225300
Unlike Pacific Rim, I actually had higher hopes for World War Z.
With Pacific Rim I got pretty much what I was expecting. But World War Z was a let down.

Maybe that's the reason for the disparity at the box office. People are more likely to spend their money on World War Z in the hopes it would actually be good, whereas with Pacific Rim you know in advance pretty much what you're going to get.

To go off on a brief tangent about The Asylum, lately when I'm flipping through my on screen programming guide, I keep seeing this program titled "Shark Rotator Vacuum." My first thought was that someone Asylum'd The Asylum and made a cheap knockoff of Sharknado. But it turns out it's some shopping channel informercial for an actual vacuum cleaner.
