From what I heard back in the #raspberryheaven days, Japanese broadcasters do that to anime for mature audiences or anime seen as creepy but draws in viewers. I made the same comment in >>223781 when I was reading this chapter. There were one or two comments in the Yotsuba thread on /a/ that said the same thing (I know I said I don't visit 4chan, but I do occasionally check out /a/ when there's a new Yotsuba chapter to see what people are saying about it).

The note in the margin of the final page in Dengeki Daioh says there will be a new chapter in March though, and the end of volume 12 says "To Be Continued" just like the end of the first 11 volumes, so I think it's safe to say the series will continue.

Actually, I noticed Azuma ended volume 11 the same way, with a kind of grand-finale style full page image.

Mr. Gao (Gao-san) seems to be a creation of the TV series Tantei Night Scoop. His most distinguishing features are the long hair on his head, arms, and chest, painted face, two red candles, and assless pants with a ping-pong ball stuck between his butt cheeks.

He seems to show up at the houses of unruly children who won't go to bed when they're supposed to, because if anything makes kids more likely to go to sleep, it's seeing the boogeyman in their room at night.

Sometimes he'll "incapacitate" one of the parents when he first appears.

I watched the first episode, but I just can't take attractive characters with social anxieties seriously. It sounds like a harsh attitude, especially when 99.9999% of media has attractive characters, but it just doesn't make for a believable plot in this case.
It would have also made for an interesting insight, especially considering Japan has very obtuse social customs, but it just seems like all the women in the series are just going to end up clamoring for the male protag's cock eventually.

If any series were to go down that route, Yahari Ore no Seishun Rabu Kome wa Machigatteiru/My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU does a much better job of that, imo.

I was thinking it was either all girls, or a healthy mix of boys and girls (although more realistically it would have just been all boys). I haven't actually seen any of it, I've just seen some fan art and read the series premise.

Then a series I would recommend would be Kokoro Connect. It has a good character dynamics (two boys and three girls. Healthy enough?), albeit over dramatic at times.
The plot starts with the characters switching bodies at random, then they start building trust with each other to solve their mental/emotional issues. It has some romance, but it's not shoehorned in and not overdrawn like most series today.
Plus, Inaban is cute.

The gender distribution doesn't really concern me that much, just as long as it isn't a harem anime where there's one male protagonist with a large cast of females inexplicably falling over him.
I'm mostly into slice-of-life series like Azumanga, Sketchbook, Nichijou, and the like.
I also consider Squid Girl a slice-of-life series despite it's fantastical premise.
How did someone here once phrase it? "Series where characters make gentle connections with one another" or something like that?

I've never really been able to get into action or fantasy series. Fullmetal Alchemist is my one exception, plus Haruhi if you can consider that a fantasy series.

An example of a slice-of-life-ish series I didn't like would have to be Honey & Clover. Too much college-student angsty romance drama.

I was going to make a thread recommending this, but Yuyushiki reminded me quite a bit of AzuDai. It's lighthearted in the same way. There's the Tomo character, the mix of Sakaki and Yomi, and then there's the ...elegant Osaka? Or maybe more of cross with the pink-haired girl in Lucky Star.
Yuru Yuri is also fun, but it doesn't pick up until after three episodes. After that, balls on walls fun.

I like slice of life manga as well and found a few you might be interested in. First there is "Kabu No Isaki" by the same mangaka who brought us "Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou", Ashinano Hitoshi. Then there is "Non Non Byori" by Atto. "Shirley Madison" by Mori Kaoru who also does "Otoyomegatari".

My favorite slice of life of recent was Polar Bear Cafe a few seasons ago, it's often very slow, but I liked it's humor.
