I think the real truth is that we simply don't know, and probably never will. Alas the debate will go on forever. On the one hand you've got fans of Lewis Carrol's literature who somehow get offended if you suggest that Carrol might have been a pedo. God forbid their beloved author wasn't perfect! You end up with a knee-jerk reaction: Of course he wasn't! How could you even suggest that, etc. This doesn't make any sense to me because even if he was a pedo (which we don't know) it has no bearing on his literature at all. It's still great, pedo or not.
On the other hand you've got people who think that just because he took photos of children then he must be a pedo, which is just as silly as the above.
Bottom line: we don't know one way or the other, and even if we did, why would it matter?
