Let's see, we both discovered Azumanga Daioh when we were in college (Morichan first caught it on late night TV, while my first introduction was the Azumanga Daioh clips in AMV Hell 3).
We both studied foreign languages in high school that we don't really remember now (English for him, Spanish for me).
We both work somewhat mundane corporate day jobs.
We were both born in the hot, southern regions of our respective countries.
Morichan was equally shocked/disappointed that no one in my class had heard of Yotsubato, or even Azuma Kiyohiko.
We both like the Back to the Future and Terminator movies. He listed several others as well but those are the only two I remember at the moment.

We talked a little about my being a vegetarian, and Morichan was very kind and arranged a vegetarian meal at the restaurant. I felt really bad for making him go out of his way like that.
He told me he was originally going to take me to a meat place, since he thought all Americans loved meat (which I'll bet is generally true).
I told him I was expecting there to be more vegetarians in Japan what with the number of Buddhist followers, but he said people who live at the temples are really the only ones who strictly follow that, and most people only acknowledge that stuff on solemn occasions (like funerals). I said many American Christian followers are the same way, only being observant on special occasions or holidays.

Japan never struck me as having a lot of food taboos or any strict dietary restrictions outside of temple monks, so I'm not surprised by morichan's comments or idea about going to a meat place as a means of treating someone.

Meat that's not fish or chicken is generally a luxury item in most countries in that part of the world, AFAIK. Bringing someone to such a restaurant or serving a lot of meat dishes is a sign of affluence or showing the guest's importance is recognized.

I'm not so sure that's the case here. I haven't really priced meat since I've gotten here since it's nothing that would concern me, but there's certainly no shortage of beef at grocery stores or restaurants (or noodle/rice stands). Seafood may be more plentiful and less expensive, but I would imagine that's just a natural consequence of Japan being a nation of islands, and being historically supported by a fishing industry.
Remember, this is the country that invented Kobe beef. It's hard to imagine a luxury item like that developing in a place where beef is a scarce resource.

The abundance of relatively cheap meat is fairly recent - like the past 40 years or so in most of the East, IIRC. It's still got some luxury connotations, given how meat restaurants have been seen as places to go, especially all you can eat places.

The cows that became wagyu only began being bred in the late Meiji era... AND Kobe beef only began getting commercial recognition in the 80s. From what I can tell, at least with Japan, easy access to cheap beef wasn't really a thing until the boom years in the 70s and 80s,when they could import beef and pork in large numbers. As of 2008,they're one of the largest importers of those two types of meat from Australia, Europe, and so on. Given the terrain everywhere but Hokkaido isn't really suitable for large herds of cattle, it makes sense. Note also that their beef imports took a bit of a dive after the recession really hit them in late 2008.

And Japan only got the really expensive boutique produce market going after the boom of the 70s began, IIRC. Just like China the past 5-8 years, they began spending more on those special luxury foods... and regular Japanese tried to imitate what the movers and shakers were doing. V

I remember Morichan mentioning this to me when we had lunch. He commented how it was his dream to see an Azumanga movie come out. He said even though it had been so long since the series was on the air, Evangelion was a TV series in the 90s, and there's a new movie about that coming out next year.

Someone posted a picture out such a sweater on Twitter, and then it just took off. I've seen both drawn versions, and professional cosplayers wearing them. Impressively, some of them did the sweaters justice.
