Yotsuba says "Omi-" (omiyage) but stops short.
Then when she starts again, she says "Omiso" (miso soup).
It was just a lucky coincidence that "souvenir" and "soup" also start with the same three letters.

I remember finding creatures in the wood grain of my bed's headboard when I was about Yotsuba's age.

I'm not sure if Hiramatsu is a real thing or not.

Nashi means "pear" and also "without." So she's saying to do away with the pears.

The most obvious route to localize this in English would be something with pear/pair, but I couldn't think of anything that didn't sound awkward or forced. I like this translation even though it's not really a pun, because it manages to sound natural, and it's also the kind of silly rhyme that would make a five-year-old laugh.

There is a spring or some other means that makes the "pencil holder" snap back when you rotate the crank. You can see it in the video somewhere when he uses it without a pencil inside.

With one hand, you engage the crank while the other hand holds the entire thing steady.

Wow, Koiwai's mom is indeed a badass (she can block a Yotsuba headbutt), as well as a hardass (she yells at Yotsuba to put her shoes away even when they're not in her house). Of course, the tough, take-no-shit older Asian woman is probably a common type in fiction as well as in life.

At first, I thought those were the sharpeners with the dials on them (never did figure out which ones were used for regular 2HB pencils).
Those were what we used in my kindergarden class, so I assumed Yots had a similar one. They were attached to the edge of a counter.

I like Grandma's approach when dealing (playing?) with Yotsuba. She raised Koiwai before, so she knows how to handle matters more swiftly now, I guess. I wonder what drew inspiration for Azuma to use this chemistry?

I'll admit that Koiwai's relationship to grandma is left open to interpretation. I can't think of anything that explicitly indicates that she is or isn't his actual mother. But following Occam's razor, the simplest explanation would be that she is just his mom, and it's nothing more complicated than that.

I guess it's true that it isn't inexplicably stated that Grandma isn't "grandma." It doesn't particularly matter since that's how Yots and Koiwai see it, anyway, too.
Although, since this is Japan, aren't titles used for family a lot more literal or on a serious level? I don't recall reading too many manga where any old man is just called grandpa, and such. Unless there's some catch-all term I don't know about (e.g. "pops") in Japanese.
I don't know. I just figured how people address each other in Japanese was always a pretty big clue, as opposed to the informal nuances we would use in English. /shrug

It's actually the opposite, familial terms are used as casual ways to refer to strangers quite often.
oba-san, baa-chan, oji-san, jii-chan, nee-san, musume (I think), and so on.

Baa-chan means grandma, but is also a generic term for an elderly woman. Jii-san means grandpa, but again, is a generic term for an elderly man (like "gramps" or "pops"). Nee-san means big sister, but is used as a generic term for a young adult woman.

^And this is why you're translating Yotsuba and I'm not. This clears up a lot on my end. Thanks!

This board doesn't really have the same review process like on Yuri Project, so translations posted here are generally considered finished, especially since by the time I post them I've uploaded them to mediafire and distributed the link (although I typically only distribute the link on /azu/, this time I also posted it in /a/ since someone included a link to that thread in >>228648).

However, please don't refrain from pointing out translation errors if you find them. If they're significant enough I can issue a correction, which usually involves me taking down the old mediafire file and uploading a new one.

So far I'm only aware of two issues: Yotsuba's speech bubble being incorrectly assigned to Koiwai (which on its own wouldn't warrant a rerelease in my opinion) and the mention of Hiramatsu, which I will probably end up correcting, ultimately.

I think it's reasonable to assume that this is Koiwai's actual mother. Even though he's a bit more lax in raising Yotsuba, he sure seems to have been "raised right" himself, and is pretty strict in making her act proper. And she's one cool dame.

I was a bit surprised you didn't know about the pencil sharpener, though. Those were standard throughout grade school.

Also nice to see the Azumanga wink with the uniform.
