There’s obviously going to be a chapter about Koiwai looking into buying a house, but of course that means they won’t be next door to the Ayases (wait, what’s the standard pluralization of a family name in Japan? English-speaking countries throw an S on the end…). Yotsuba’ll throw a fit, and eventually he’ll relent. Maybe he’ll wind up buying this house outright.

Not that it really matters; we only have a few more months in-world before Yotsuba’s first day of school, and that’s obviously when he’s going to end the series.

Wait how much time pasted since the first chapter? A few months in Yotsuba are many chapters, which on the other hand are many years in real life because thanks Azuma one chapter every 8 months

It sounds weird, but I really like when I'm watching anime or reading manga and I have to stop and look up any folklore or cultural references that they do. It's one of the reasons I love Azuma's work.

  No.230402   Report

Ralen, you've got to stop this. This series is on the way to destruction. Only a concentrated attack of missiles aimed at the planet Venus can ensure this series destruction. Until that day, we have your translations, and we enjoy them. This series is beautiful. We can't just launch those missiles because some children might feel sad inside like they used to. We felt good, so we read the series. It's been our choice; and we love the results of our choice.

Yotsuba&! is the story of a young girl as she experiences the world in the budding years of childhood. Once she gets into school, that experience becomes structure, codification, and learning because you’re told (and only what you’re told) rather than the magic of a child discovering something on her own.

How old is Ena? Yotsuba’s 5 (so we’ll see her 6th birthday in a future chapter, I’m sure); are they close enough that they’d go to the same school, even for a bit?

Take into account just how long it has taken him to get this far and how many more months there are before school starts, I figure that it will almost have to end then.

Oh, and with Azumanga ending on the last day of school, it seems only fitting that Yotsuba&! end on the first day.

Once it’s over, I’d be game to see an extended epilogue of Yotsuba in high school, but he’d have to write it extremely well for it to fit.

  No.230629   Report

I also believe the manga will end pretty soon, but I believe that because I need to believe it. I think every chapter is the last chapter so every new chapter is special. I want to be prepared for when the end is announced.
It'd be ideal to end it with Yotsuba first day of school, but it'll be sad to see the manga end. Also, what will Azuma do after Yotsuba?
Does he have a plan? Would people even accept a different manga? I don't know... I fear I may find myself one day reading his new menga and going "meh, this is pretty good but it sure ain't Yotsuba!"
If we're gonna have spinoffs I'd like to see parallel Azumanga Daioh, to be honest.

>I fear I may find myself one day reading his new menga and going "meh, this is pretty good but it sure ain't Yotsuba!"

His writing seemed pretty intact when he did those new AzuDai chapters. I think whatever he moves on to next (if he doesn't retire/die by then) I think he'll have a solid grasp on it.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Azumanga Daioh: The Next Generation. Seeing how every other current series tries to shoehorn slice-of-life bits, why not have the master return to show them all how this bullshit is done and run?

If and when Azuma runs out of material for Yotsuba, I'd like to see him do a series of one-off "what if" chapters featuring the cast of Azumanga. Things that would have no continuity with anything else, like Tomo brings about nuclear armageddon, or an alternate dimension where the whole cast is male.

As for Sakaki, I like the idea of her being a mom and going "ara ara" because she has a rocking body for a teen but let's face it, that body is kinda wasted on a teen. That body is 100% MILF material, and it's extra rad if that MILF is mild-mannered and soft-spoken and is kind and loves her little son and goes "ara ara"

Not just for the marriage itself, but for the actual rights and benefit packages spouses get (e.g. insurance, taxes, etc.). Actually, I'm not even sure if they get all that yet, either.

Yeah, but you can get every single benefit we associate with marriage by incorporating. In my country we won't have same-sex marriage for at least ten more years, but same-sex couples cleverly fill in some legal forms and presto, they have something that is exactly like a marriage in matters such as inheritance rights, automatic hospital visitation rights, every single fun thing about taxes, etcetera. Singles can adopt here, too (which is something I plan to do by the way)
And the beautiful part is, straight couples are doing it too. Because marriage comes with a benefit package you can't customize. I say that's way smarter.
And hey, you can also have a ceremony because who the hell could stop you from that.
But in principle I think the right to marry should be extended to everyone, even though I think marriage is a bad idea.

  No.230715   Report

Prior to the various court cases, most US states had laws and/or constitutional amendments banning not only same-sex marriage but also marriage-like arrangements, presumably to prevent just such "clever" legal shenanigans. Some of these were worded broadly enough that people were worried they could interfere with the formation of small businesses.

I don't remember enough to hunt down specific details, but I'm pretty sure I remember reading about a number of cases where same-sex partners' attempts to secure rights by alternative means didn't hold up once "official" next of kin got involved.

On a related topic, it will be interesting to see what happens to civil unions (marriage-lite) in the future in states that offered them before marriage. Will that option remain in place? I know in some states a few opposite-sex couples have used them, so I guess there must be situations where they are preferable for some.

  No.230727   Report

>>230720
It was only banned in 14 states actually, not most of them. Though they all probably did have laws preventing any civil union/domestic partnership style workarounds. My state in particular even went so far as to pass laws against using a valid out of state marriage for simple legal matters like changing your last name.

  No.230728   Report

>>230727

That's 14(ish) as of last week. It was banned in most states until last October, and only a few states have legalized it through legislative action. The rest came through various court cases over the years (most fairly recent) where laws against it were overturned.

The only oddball I can think of is New Mexico, where there was no law specifying marriage as opposite-sex, and the court case came after a series of county clerks started unilaterally issuing licenses to same-sex couples.

This conversation is rapidly converging with the topic of the other thread, lol.

Some gay people are obviously "different" from a very early age, while others you'd never know unless they tell you. Some know that they are attracted to members of the same gender even before they know the word for it, while others don't figure it out until well after adulthood.

Miura could be in either category on both points. I wouldn't be surprised if she was a lesbian, but I'm not ready to conclude for sure that she is. She's no Miu.

Contrast that with Asagi and Tora, who I'm pretty sure are already boning.
