I was making some ramen soup at home that I bought at the ramen shop, and as I was boiling the bag to heat up the refrigerated soup mix for the noodles, somehow I managed to tear a hole in the bag, and by the time I realized, all the soup mix had dissolved in the hot water, creating a ton of insanely thin broth, so what the heck am I supposed to do now?

In Japanese there are a crazy number of ways to count things. "Hitori" for one person, "ikko" for one small thing, "ichimai" for one flat thing, "ippai" for one cup, "ichidai" for one large machine. There may be some governing logic, but you basically just go by rules of thumb. Even if you mess up, people know what you're talking about. When I was studying English in school, I got the same feeling that there were basically no rules, but I figured since I wouldn't be taking lessons anymore, it didn't really matter.

Well, the truth is, I wasn't really all that helpful. Also, this wasn't the first time I helped out. I've done it before too. Also, even when I worked on the draft, all I did was the cover of a picture book... It was a picture book (less than 1cm big) called "The Squirrel Baker" (which also shows up in the "Lion" series). There are apparently two pronunciations for the word "liter" in Japanese. "litaa" and "littoru." Gasoline uses the former.
It may be that this comes from the difference between the European and American spellings ("litre" versus "liter.")
