Actually I wouldn't be surprised if Azuma tweeted something like that. But there would have to be something particularly noteworthy about the event. Not just the fact that it was long.

I didn't realize Mr. Satomi had posted it. I only ever check Azuma's twitter.
I wonder if Yotsuba's opponent is supposed to be Kunio Yonenaga, the shogi master who was defeated by the computer Bonkuras.

Speaking of Mr. Satomi, I've finally completed Watashi no Oniichan 6. I posted about it on the 4koma board and sent the translated pages to AnonymouS with a capital S. All that's left now is for him to release them. I asked him to please let me know when and where he does so I can post the link here/on the 4koma board.

  No.227037   Report

  No.227038   Report

>>227037
AnonymouS with a capital S requested that I allow him to upload/release it instead of doing it myself. I don't really understand the reason why, but since he was the one who provided me with the scans I'm honoring his request.
If I had scanned it myself I would have just released it on my own.

  No.227041   Report

>>227037
Okay, AnonymouS with a capital S has released the file which is available either as a download through their IRC channel or through an online reader here:
http://dokusha.info/read/watashi_no_oniichan/en-us/6/0/page/1

However, the download uses uncompressed png files and is over 110MB in size, and both the download and the online reader version have the release group's watermark on every fucking page. It also includes my translation notes in the margins of the pages which I specifically requested he not do, although I suppose I understand doing things that way from the viewpoint of using the online reader.

So, here is what we'll call my Director's Cut.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/49v6ohv4i4w9ogr/%5BRalen%5D%20Watashi%20no%20Oniichan%206%20%5BENG%5D.rar
It has all the same content as the "official" release above, but without the obnoxious watermark on each page, and with the translation notes in a .txt file instead of crammed into the margins.
The image quality is marginally worse as the files are compressed jpegs instead of pngs (the quality difference is only noticeable if you're zoomed in to about 500% though), and the file is only about 1/3rd the size, which means you don't have to spend forever downloading it (38MB versus 114MB). The image resolution of all the pages is still the same as the png version.

I wrote, "If you were going to Nagoya, where would you go?" and got lots of responses of "Osu." When I tried looking up pictures to see what kind of place it was, I got an endless steam of pictures of women in gold, and now I know less than when I started.
12:07 PM Nov 27th

It's true. If you google image search 大須 (Osu) you'll get lots of pictures of naked women painted in gold (and some men too) performing in the street. It seems to be the "Gold Dust Show," a popular act in the annual street performance festival.

I don't mind you distributing non-watermarked versions, but at least keep the credit page. gamnark and I have spent a lot of time and money for those raws, and without it, it would have been for waste. As a side note, the watermark is very small compared to the entire image size and isn't a huge issue for anyone reading it. It was included to prevent non-English groups from using the scans without permission.

  No.227047   Report

>>227046
Justify it however you want, the watermark is ugly, self-serving, and unnecessary. And I don't particularly like seeing it splattered on pages that I spend probably hundreds of hours translating, cleaning, and typesetting.

I didn't notice the credits page at the end, so I will take the old link down and upload a new one that includes that page so as to give credit to the scanner, because this wouldn't have been possible without the scans.
But you have some serious balls telling people not to put this translation on any online readers when you've taken practically every one of my prior translations, without permission, and put them on your own online reader. For all the concern you have over people "stealing" your "work" you never seemed to show any of that same concern when you started co-opting my translations.

Oh, and no Yotsuba or IM this month either. Awesome.

  No.227054   Report

>>227047 What amazes me is the water mark, even though after the last ordeal you seemed completely unwilling to host even a credits page to protect people from taking credit for your work, and as I remember it, the main reason was groups that watermark their work in ways like this, giving more credit to themselves then the original author ever took. And yet, less then one year later, here's something you worked on, with one of the larger and uglier watermarks I've seen...

I'd be annoyed too...

  No.227063   Report

>>227054
Although it's gratuitous, I don't really mind the .png format and excessive file size that much.
And it may not be my preference, but I don't particularly mind the translation notes crammed in the margins. When you work on a group project you don't always get everything your way.
I wouldn't even mind if my name wasn't credited, and the whole thing was just listed as a "Ray=out" release, or even if there was a small watermark or credits on just the title page.

What I do mind is seeing every single page that I cleaned in painstaking and obsessive detail until they were perfect, defaced with this group's watermark.
What I do mind is the bullshit pretense that this obnoxious logo "keeps people from stealing our scans" when this group basically crawls the web copying translations from other websites without permission.
Plus, why would you even care if someone uses your English scans to do a non-English translation? Do you think you somehow have exclusive use of this book you pirated?

What I do mind is the credits page that has a link to donate money to the group (funny that I've never received any payment for my work on this) while at the same time a disclaimer on their website warns people, "Do not try to profit from this material."
What I do mind is when that same credits page has the warning "Do no (sic) re-host this scanlation on any on-line readers," when right beside it on the same fucking website is a hosting of several of my translations, all credited to "Yotsuba Scans," that were uploaded without anyone ever asking me.

The gall and level of hypocrisy is just astounding.

But just so I'm not misunderstood, I truthfully don't care if people distribute my translations without asking. I translate things to help share them with the world, not to get famous from it. I don't even care if you don't credit me, although you're more than welcome to do so.
I do care when you take something I poured blood, sweat, and tears into, credit me as a footnote, smear your own shitty logo over everything as you beg for money, all the while warning other people not to steal or try to profit from "your" work.

Congratulations. I'm usually a pretty nice and easygoing guy, but you have now successfully pissed me off.

Although I have a long history of rolling my eyes when fan scan/sub/hack groups collectively flip cat turds I'm in the same camp as this guy and could certainly see myself getting annoyed over this sort of thing. This sort of stuff is supposed to be pro bono and kept mostly pristine to share with other fans. It's certainly not supposed associated with begging and personal profit or fame. Why should anyone care if scans wind up floating around the Internet, that's what they're supposed to do, right? Or am I just wrong? This is a berserk button that has existed for me since I was a shota on the internet in 1999 and it still bugs me to this day. Fan translation groups plastering their name on things that they didn't make and have no right to do that doesn't help the community at all man. @azumakiyohiko
A little while ago I was getting nostalgic listening to Soramimi Cake. Once when an American manga artist came over for a visit, I recall he asked me, "The lyrics to this theme song make no sense when translated to English. Have they been misinterpreted?" I responded, "No, I think they've been translated correctly."

So all this time I was assuming the time stamps I'm seeing on twitter are for my local time zone.
But it appears they're all one time zone earlier than mine. Because when I try to calculate the local Japanese time Azuma's tweets were made I always end up an hour off. I don't really understand the reason they're displaying in the wrong time zone (I don't have a twitter account so it's not like I can change my settings) but I guess I'll just have to remember when doing my conversions that the displayed timestamp is actually an hour earlier than my local time.

5:09 PM Jan 3rd

I'm not sure what he means by "Slender."
I found that "Slender" was a character from Mobile Suit Gundam, and his name is written the same as the word "Calendar" except for the first letter.
But some of the replies to Azuma's tweet mention another Gundam character called Sleggar. So I'm not entirely sure what the connection is.
"Slender" could also be "Surrender." One of the replies to Azuma says "How did you get from Slender to Mobile Suit Gundam?" but I'm more curious how he got to "Slender" from talking about his calendar.

@azumakiyohiko When you compare the features you could get for the price of an iPad mini with a car installation kit, things like a car audio function and heat resistance, a backup camera, or beacon unit (for traffic information) I think you'll agree.
A "multi-purpose" device is nothing more than that.
But a purpose-built device is purpose-built with so many minute functions that you might not even consider.
10:32 AM Jan 31st

@azumakiyohiko
@kanpei7007 Maybe the manufacturer's ideal navigation system is just different from what I'm looking for in one.
10:37 AM Jan 31st

@kanpei7007
@azumakiyohiko Yeah, I think that's probably true.
With modern car navigation systems, there are simple models comparable to a smart phone that are geared toward the general public, then you have someone like Pioneer, who's in the business of entertainment, so they have a high end model that's equipped with stuff like 3D gyro sensors that can track your car's position down to the centimeter (cont.)
11:00 AM Jan 31st

@kanpei7007
@azumakiyohiko And then right in the middle you've got mid-grade models that are pretty easy to use with basic audio and navigation functions. Most people are going to fall somewhere in the market for one of these three types, so if you're looking for something outside, you may be out of luck
(cont. again)
11:00 AM Jan 31st

@kanpei7007
@azumakiyohiko You may just need to look some place like Yahoo Auctions to find what you're looking for, from an Asian manufacturer in some place like Korea, China, or Taiwan.
Japanese companies tend to focus on the customers going to brick and mortar stores, so you may have to resort to outside Asian companies whose focus is online sales.

When I signed the service contract with my new phone provider I signed up for this service that supposedly makes it easy to make payments to NTT. So then when I tried to login to that service online, it started telling me all these annoying things, like that I had to come up with 2 different passwords, or that the user ID I selected couldn't be used, to the point that when I finally did get logged in, the first thing I did was cancel my contract.

I had never heard of any security system that requires two different passwords before, but googling it it sounds like a good number of Japanese websites have something like that in place.

I think it's supposed to be read:
"Seafood Direct from the Lovely Lady Diver Duo."
And they sell "grilled squid, dried sardines, horned turban (a kind of sea snail), and salted squid dried overnight."

But the way the sign is laid out it reads
"Seafood Direct from the Lovely Lady Diver Duo, Grilled Squid"

You don't think it's ridiculous to have a button on a water heater that makes the temperature lower than what you've set it to?
Why not just set the temperature lower?

It's obviously just a cynical marketing ploy by the manufacturer so they can say they make an environmentally friendly product.

It would be like having an air conditioner with an "Eco" button that keeps the temperature of the house slightly warmer than what you've set it to.

  No.227706   Report

To be fair it probably just increases the range at which it operates, so it heats to the stated temperature, but lets the temp fall more before restarting, and where can you get an air-conditioner that doesn't have that option.

  No.227707   Report

>>227706
According to the manufacturer's website it "maintains" the temperature at 1 degree Celsius below whatever the set temperature is. In the example they show, if you set it to keep your water heated to 40 degrees, but then press the Eco button, it will keep your water heated to only 39 degrees.

I don't know of any air conditioner that will keep the house at 73 degrees if I've set my thermostat to 72.

They've been selling my hometown's specialty "Ikanago no Kugini" around here, so I bought some. Yum.
11:47 AM Apr 13th

Ikanago no kugini is a regional specialty from the inland sea surrounding Awaji Island, which is a part of Hyogo prefecture, Azuma's hometown.
http://japanesefooddictionary.blogspot.com/2012/03/ikanago-no-kugini.html

According to that link they're called kugini (simmered nails) because the finished dish resembles a plate of bent, rusty nails.

But because of their shape and metallic color, I think a pot of uncooked ikanago looks an awful lot like a pot of actual straight nails.
Attached picture is the best example I could find of uncooked ones floating in a pot. You can find plenty of pictures of the finished product though.

This apparently refers to a transition from the old green-band Pentax lenses to the newer red-band ones, which indicate a new line of lenses. Also possibly to keep buyers from confusing them with Canon lenses with green bands (although Canon apparently makes lenses with red bands as well).

>seeing a two year old being such a big fan is interesting.

About half of the responses to these tweets say this kid must be getting "special" education at home.

>Here's what the kid was talking about

I found that "Nikko-Nikko-Nii~!" clip from the anime, but the way Azuma phrased it made it sound like the kid was singing along with words to one of the songs from the rhythm game. The closest I could find was this song which has the lyrics "Nikko-Nikko-Niko-Niko" and "Kantan desho?" (although in Azuma's tweet he wrote "Kantan yo ne.")

That's another thing that popped into my head; I guess someone like Azuma might be familiar with a series like Love Live!(I wonder if he had the game already on his iPad or just checked that song on YouTube?), but that kid just outed his parents, which is pretty funny. I would think a show like would air at like 2 in the morning.

I actually don't care much for the music and I haven't played the game on iOS (funny enough, it's getting a U.S. release later this year, which almost never happens for niche series outside Japan), but the Nico-nico-ni part I thought more of a catchphrase of the character. I wasn't even aware it was featured in a song myself since there isn't a lot of music featured on the show. CD singles, though, maybe.
If anyone into's carefree series with a colorful cast, Love Live may interest /azu/. The second season is currently airing in Japan. It's actually interesting that Azuma tweeted that bit, because the latest episode feature Nico and her siblings doing the whole nico-nico-ni bit.

One of Azuma's followers speculated he may have been saying shaburitai (want to suck) instead of shaberitai (want to talk about).

Is it normal to breastfeed a 2-year-old? Or was this guy just trying to be funny?

So what are Azuma's assistants doing for months now since he is not doing Yotsuba? Do they bring him tea in bed, sweep his floor or give him bjs?

  No.227976   Report

Maybe working on other materials for Yotsuba? It would make sense seeing as how Azuma is only dicking around with plants and shit. He probably looks over the material gathered and does his magic.
Then again, if they're the ones relying on Azuma's output, they could be doing other work for clients is my guess. I remember there were a few illustrations Yotuba Studios did as posters or some such.

I guess work as an artist's assistant can be kind of sporadic. They may have other day jobs. When Azuma says "Kiolokugram-kyuu" I think he's referring to this video.

It's an interesting insight in how Azuma frames his panels. I don't read too many manga series, but stuff like that stands out to me in Yotsuba.

What I'm really interested in, though, are reference photos Azuma uses for characters like Fuuka and Miura and how he makes them so sexy. There has to be a departure of technique from his doujin days to AzuDai to Yotsuba. I really wonder how he comes up some of his most memorable cheesecake shots.

In the very beginning of the series, when summer vacation ends and Fuuka goes back to school, Koiwai mentions a friend of Yotsuba's named Mi-chan who had started school.

It wasn't until the sandbox chapter that "Dotty" was identified by Yotsuba as Mi-chan.

It's unclear if this is supposed to be the same Mi-chan. The implication was that the original Mi-chan mentioned by Koiwai was an older friend of Yotsuba's from when they still lived with Koiwai's mother, so that would make it unlikely that she's the same person as this "Dotty" character.

Azuma's shirt appears to read コロス (korosu = "I'll kill you") but the first character is flipped. I can't tell if it's supposed to actually say something else, or if the point is just to get people behind to you to try to read it out loud and make you feel nervous, like Azuma's assistants did.

The play on words is that "avant-garde" is already pronounced "avan-garudo" using Japanese phonetics, and "do" (度) means the degree or level of something. So "avan-garu-do" (アヴァンギャル度) is the degree of avant-garde-ness.

I wonder if Space Expo is any good.

Yeah, it sounds like Azuma might be developing arthritic shoulders. Forty-six isn't too early to develop arthritis, although I would think history of an injury would make the possibility more likely.

My dad had to get arthritis treatment when he was in his mid 40s. Then again, he was truck driver with a history of injuries...

Azuma must have had a hard life.

I've been recording Attack on Titan ever since they started airing it on Adult Swim so I could binge-watch the whole series once it ended, but my DVR missed like 2 episodes in the middle when the programs started getting listed with the original Japanese air dates instead of the American air dates. My DVR thought they were reruns since the original air dates showed last year sometime, and skipped them. So now I have to either rent the DVDs or wait for them to air again.
It did the same thing with Black Lagoon, but in that case I caught it and updated the recording settings before I missed any.

You can watch AoT on Crunhyroll. I think you can sign up for a free 14 day trail.

You're kind of squeezing your own nuts by not watching AoT. Probably the one series that I notice people outside anime circles who were actively watching it as it aired like it was The Walking Dead or Breaking Bad.
Try to make time for it before you make it out to Japan.

Black Lagoon wrapped up last night (looks like they're not airing the OVA for some reason) so I finished off the last several episodes of that today.

Attack on Titan won't finish airing for a few more months though.

I have a tendency to leave things where they are once I get them out, so I guess I can't help it if my room tends to get cluttered.

I decided to give this titanium G pen I've been hearing about a try. For the record, the pen I usually use is a Japanese lettering pen, but not a G pen.
5:57 PM Sep 13th

Apparently a "G" pen is a type of dip pen with a tip specialized for writing letters.
This nomenclature seems to be primarily Japanese, since when I googled "G Pen" in English, I came up with lots of results for a vape pen called the "G Pen."

I'm using the G Pen now, it's an amazing steel nib for inking comics. It's very popular especially among comic artists. When in good shape, it can produce both very fine lines and thicker ones with more pressure.

I have the Zebra "G" pens. I inherited a bunch from my late brother. I also have a large collection of steel nibs I have acquired from various sources.
