If that is Azuma's drawing setup I'm looking closely at those blue pencils with the black ends. Are those Staedtler Mars Lumographs? Those are my favorite pencils to draw with. Hard to buy locally but well worth getting.

Pretty close to what I pictured his work station to look like.
I wonder if he has given any thought into those digital drawing pads.

When I first began seeing mangakas at work in pictures or in illustrations I noticed many work off lightboards. Normally I would use a lightboard when tracing or doing animation. But some even ink straight on them.

Drawing off a sloped surface feels pretty good. Chances are, they built a habit of leaning on the lightboard like I do.

I love inking off of a lightboard, because you don't have to erase and you don't smear the ink with your eraser.

I also remember him discussing his lightboard at one point, but I can't find it now. He was theorizing that if he got an LED TV, he could use it as a lightboard, and also watch TV while he drew.

Thanks for the eyewitness reports on strap Yotsuba. Due to the lack of any sort of monopoly on these, what's in stock will vary by store, so I can't really say personally. Lots of people have seen them at various convenience stores. Also at stores like Animate and Volks. Some are also saying Don Quijote and Village Vanguard or Sofmap and Yodobashi. I think bookstores occasionally have them too.

The 500 Color Camera app is an iPhone app created by Felissimo to tie in to their 500 color pencils. http://www.felissimo.co.jp/global/

Apparently the app lets you take a picture of something, it will determine the predominant color in the image, and then identify its corresponding match from the 500 color pencil line. You can create your own catalogue of reference photos for each color, upload them, share with friends, etc.

This particular photo, of what I can only assume is Azuma's palm, has registered as the color "Alpaca Sweater."

Here's an easy way you can tell: My autograph will always say "To so-and-so," with the recipient's name. Even The Tokyo Institute of Art Research (mysteriously) didn't catch that.

Tachikiri drawing is pretty hard. (Tachikiri = drawing right up to the page cutoff). I did some calculations and figured that I end up with 1.4 times more drawing space than staying within the margins. That's a bigger difference than I expected.

With Pacific Rim I got pretty much what I was expecting. But World War Z was a let down.

Maybe that's the reason for the disparity at the box office. People are more likely to spend their money on World War Z in the hopes it would actually be good, whereas with Pacific Rim you know in advance pretty much what you're going to get.

Regarding the original drawings. Ever since about volume 10 I've started doing the touchup work digitally. At first it was like "I can composite as much as I want! It's digital!" and it was popular to do characters and backgrounds as separate drawings. But lately it's more like "Compositing is too much work" and I'm going back to just one drawing like before.

After looking over the paperback volumes again I wanted to go a second time!
After I saw online that you did the camping chapter for real I got really into camping and started going to all kinds of shops. It was really bad, lol.

I was shocked to see in the original illustrations you inked over white-out.
From my personal experience, I usually can't get it to stick that well and it just ends up looking messy. I was totally blown away by how well you can use it!!!
I just can't get over the warmth of your hand drawings!!!

@tissue74 You must be seriously hardcore to notice how I use white-out. One of my tricks is to use an eraser on the white-out after it's dried.

I would've thought it'd just smear black all over.
Maybe it's the amount, or you're using a kind that doesn't crack? (°_°)

@tissue74 The correction fluid I use is nothing special, just blue Misnon. My eraser is an ordinary MONO eraser. I had been making a light pass with a kneaded eraser beforehand.

It's okay to make corrections on manuscripts! I can do that! I'm a little relieved, lol.

I used to play Monster Hunter with my assistants around the time of 2G. I had planned to hold a Monster Hunter training camp at a hot spring for 3 days and 2 nights where we would play Monster Hunter from morning until night, but the response was tepid, so it never materialized.
