While I was at Naval Recruit Training Command and undergoing the rigerious PT needed to transform a fat NEET into a sailor, I came to the realization that, realisticaly, Sakaki's running ability could only about through some dedication to exercise. This is all the more obvious when you remember that she consistently outperforms someone who is a very dedicated athlete, Kagura.
Even if she really does have a lot of natural ability, she must still run quite a bit to be that good, even if not as much as Kaguya. I can only assume I didn't realize this before since I'm used to accepting the uselessness of hard-work present in a lot of media and much of our culture.
What does it change about Sakaki's character to know that she apparently exercises a lot, but does so alone, even though one of her friends would make a natural running partner?
Hopefully Ralen is preparing, I can't wait!

What got you into Azumanga?
For me, I downloaded a cross-over parody between Azumanga Daioh and Fist of the North Star, but before reading it I thought I'd familiarise myself with the Azu characters through wiki, so that I'd get whatever jokes were within.Reading the wiki page, I was enticed, and quickly went out and bought the second volume of the manga(the first wasn't available, which might've been a good thing in the long run).
Incidentally, checking the wiki page to understand the parody turned out unnecessary, as the Azu girls weren't a big part of the story.

Anime fan here, never seen Azumanga Daioh. I'm /r/ing your advice as to whether or not I should. I "discovered" AD through its overwhelming presence in the AMV Hell videos.

How is driving with Yuakari, Chiyo?
This is only tangentially related to Yotsuba, but does anyone know of a place I can find a modern Zassetsu calendar? One that includes which days go with which of the zodiac signs? (for instance in this page Yanda says September 25th is the day of the cow).
I found this on wikipedia, but it says the dates can vary by as much as 5 days, so I'd like to find a website or something that shows the specific days for each year.

Could Osaka's odd behavior and mannerisms be the result of ADD or autism? I want her to have one of these conditions for a fanfic.
Story is, she becomes dependant on her meds, which are depressants and lessen her condition (unless there supposed to down a person in general, in which case I will change them to uppers to keep her mind on track and not daydream.)
Later in the story, she pays a man, at a "club" with Tomo, to buy her drugs. He gives her spiked drugs, Osaka passes out, man is a Yakuza and puts her into a prostitution ring. She must have sex w/ man for continued protection from rival gangs or something.
She is saved by Tomo, who pulls a "Taken" and tracks her down, telling her "I'd told you I'd find you" While Osaka weeps in her arms.

I need Azunymous's opinion on what picture I should commission and what they think, or suggestions.
I would like a picture of Kagura from Azumanga Daioh. The frame of the picture captures her head to her knees. She is wearing a one-piece school swimsuit. She is lifting big barbells above her head (30 lbs.?). Since her arms are raised, both of her hairy armpits are showing. Her face is strained with effort and has droplets of sweat dotted all over her body. Her body is muscular, such a big biceps, toned legs, belly with noticeable abdominal muscles. Would you watch an anime about Osaka's early life, one that took place before the events of Azumanga Daioh?
If you had to become an Azumanga girl living in their world, which would it be?
My first thought was Kagura because she's nice and fit without being overly breastacular like Sakaki. But then I considered that there'd be the expectation of her dedication to swimming, training and whatever. Sure, you could just blow it off, but that might raise suspicion. I doubt it'd matter all that much, but it's something I'd rather avoid having to deal with.
So I think Yomi or Sakaki would be the best choice for me.

Has there ever been an attempt to do a super fanatic /azu/ wiki?
With all the editions and renditions of Azumanga Daioh, Yotsuba&!, and Strawberry Marshmallow, it could be cool to have something that breaks it all down and cross-references it in wiki form. A side-by-side comparison of the different translations and transitions from the page to the screen.
It would be a huge undertaking to get that detailed, and it wouldn't necessarily have to be that detailed, but I have a ton of OCD energy and a need to justify my owning 4 editions of the Azumanga Daioh manga and the original 6-volume English release of the anime.

Near the end of preparing the snacks, Tomo rushed into the kitchen.
“Hey! You guys have GOT to see this!” claims Tomo with shock in her voice.
“Huh? What going on Miss Tomo?” questions Chiyo looking to Tomo.
“You guys wouldn’t believe me if I told you! Just come to Chiyo-chan’s room!” replies Tomo before rushing out of the kitchen.
“My room?” questions Chiyo puzzled. “Miss Alex is the only one there.”
“And Mr. Tadakichi…” adds Lynn, after a moment, Lynn quickly looked shocked, “Oh no… she couldn’t be!”
Lynn then rushed out of the kitchen, followed by a puzzled Chiyo and Sakaki.
When they returned upstairs and headed to Chiyo’s room, they saw Tomo peeking into the room, Although stealth went out the window as the three bowled over Tomo as they went through the door and got the shock of their lives.
“Miss Alex!” gasps Chiyo in utter shock. “Mr. Tadakichi, Noooooo!”
The three then heard a loud thud, which was the sound of Sakaki passing out and falling to the floor.

What happened was, the group had discovered Alex on her hands and knees with her pants and panties pulled down to her knees, and Mr. Tadakichi, well, very happy…End the end, Chiyo had become very angry with Alex, who was very apologetic for what happened, promising that it would never happen again, Chiyo though wasn’t as quick to forgive.

So let's suppose that while flying back from Okinawa, the Azu gang's plane crashed onto The Island from Lost. All of the main characters survived, plus possible extras/red shirts. I've been hanging on to this tribute comic from the Osaka Expo special for a while, but finally got around to translating it.
UPS delivered my copy from Amazon.com today. Really nice job from Yen Press again. 2 things; in ch.50 they have Yotsuba calling Asagi "An ugly old hag"(opposites) which I found funny in its harshness, and they mentioned in the margin notes that the series takes place in the town of Emaimachi. Does anyone know if this is a real city? I couldn't find anything using Google.

So I think Osaka has Aspergers. I am reading up on the disease in Tony Attwood's book: "The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome". I am finding many similarities between the book's descriptions of Asperger traits and Osaka's personality.
One thing aspies do is interpret things literally or in a manner that is found odd, unusual, or eccentric by non-Asperger-affected people. Osaka does this when Tomo quizzes her about what drops when a truck full of food goes around a corner. Osaka replies: "The speed, I guess." A normal person would say the food, but someone with Aspergers would say something that is true (the speed of the truck dropping), but is odd or literal. In this case, odd, as the food would literally drop while the speed figuratively drops as speed is not a tangible item, it is just an idea.
Another trait among aspies is poor motor coordination. Osaka exhibits this trait when she gets hit in the face with a volley ball (multiple times) instead of catching it. She also shows poor motor control when she tries to show the other girls how to deflect a car's blow by spinning. She falls dizzily to the ground and knocks over some desks, earning her concern from her friend, Chiyo-Chan. People with Aspergers like to spin around, like Osaka, but often fall down due to their poor motor coordination.

Watching the Azumanga anime, one really get the sense of Azuma as a developing artist operating in an new medium. The first episode is a bit haywire, as if he were attempting to make animated 4koma and then it settles down for the next 10 or so show into a pretty straightforward narrative, but after that you can see him beginning to experiment with new methods and less conventional techniques. Certainly some of these were pioneered by other artists. There is a stark difference between the first half of the series and the last half.

I haven't been posting to or reading this board for more than year, so what happened while i was gone ? Anything new in the world of Azuma ?
the cats represent boys.
So you've got this handful of girls who are all pretty normal for the most part, and sasaki in particular is tall and hot. but they never talk about boys. No crushes, no dates, not even blowing them off. There was a boy during the first season, but he was basically written out of the show. and the teacher's creepiness was ratcheted way down to him just being weird.
sakaki's trials and tribulations with cats are analagous to a young girl discovering boys, being burned by a first love, and finally meeting a nice guy from out of town who respects her and protects her. or maybe she discovers that she's a lesbian. that makes sense too, now that I think of it.
that's just like my opinion, of course. but somebody brought it up a while back and I think the theory has legs.
I haven't been on /azu/ in while and I recently shared this theory in another thread. One of the more interesting things that I think I originally picked up from here...

I think that Azuma may have mistook the meaning of the world "cool" in the context he uses it with respect to Sakaki. I think he interpreted the meaning of the word "cool" as the aloof definition rather than the cool definition of "cool" as cool.
This is why Sakaki is more aloof than awesome.

Osaka was talking to someone (Chiyo-chan? she's definitely talking to someone) and she has this sad-smile expression on her face as she remarks about how everyone considers her dumb and retarded when she isn't, and the way she says it implies she's kind of hurt by the mean comments despite how happy she looks all the time.

Howdy, /azu/. It's been a long time since I've been here, maybe years. Today as I was cleaning out my closet I came across my Azumanga manga and DVD's. I popped in those DVD's and started reliving the memories and all the fun I had on this board.
After hours of browsing and watching I thought "I should watch the movie!" Remember the movie? yeah that six minute thing? It was cool in fact really cool-- I loved it. It encompassed everything about Azumanga in such a short time span and gave a prominent role to my favorite: Osaka.So I went on over to Google video to only find that it had shut down...
You see, I can find the movie on youtube or another site; but I can't find it at the crisp high quality that it was on google video. And everyone can agree that the animation of the movie is superior to the TV show.
For old time's sake, /azu/... Is anyone willing to share or upload a high quality version of the Azumanga Daioh movie?
A teenager down the road from me had these for sale for $4 each. I have almost no spare money, so these are the first hardcopy Azuma products I've ever owned.

I've put off mentioning this long enough--any of you jokers heard of Bunny Drop (Usagi Drop in Japanese)? I think of it as a serious take on the Yotsuba story, from Koiwai's perspective. It's been out for a year or so in English, but I just learned that the live-action adaptation opens in August, and the subbed anime version will be available to watch from Crunchyroll tomorrow (July 7th).

Welp, I've finally decided to start scanning the Osaka Banpaku tribute comics. I don't know if they have already all been scanned so I am going to upload them here as I finish them (I'm not going to be scanning them very quickly).
This is my first time scanning a raw, so please let me know if there is anything I can do to improve.
About a third of these were already uploaded once before, but the artist just posted this whole thing with a couple dozen more images as a new set on pixiv, so here they are again along with some new ones.

Is there any characters in other media that remind you of Azu characters? I think, Sergerant Howie from "The Wicker Man"(not that crap with that dork Cage, but good movie with Lee) is a mix of Yomi(seriousness, responsibility and insecurities), Sakaki(aloof looks but caring personality), Kaorin(sexually usatisfied and has insecurities). Also, Lord Summerisle is a mix of Kimura(an eccentric and pretty psychotic personality) and Yukari(the same as previous, also jolly-ness).

There was some news today I thought would be of interest to /azu/.
In Nagasaki Prefecture's Tsushima City a man called to a wildlife health center, asking them to treat his sick Tsushima Cat. The center sent someone around who treated the cat, but it passed away nine hours later. It was a female, 15-16 years old, and appears to have died of old age. As Tsushima Cats are wild animals and protected by law as a Natural Monument, it is a crime to keep one privately (and has almost never happened), and the man was questioned about it. He said he found the cat as a kitten injured on a road 15 years ago, had it treated at a vet and took it in. so it would appear we are for a long Yotsubato drought with no end in sight. How about then we start doing Yotsubato fan fiction and maybe even try illustrating it? Fab fiction Yotsubato is better than no Yotsubato at all.

Speculation time, who do you think from the AzuGang is going to have a family first?
My prediction is Yomi. She maybe looks ambitious but I can see her stumble around during college and in workforce. Remember when she failed a lot of college entrance exams? I think low tier university will dishearten her more. While other AzuGang, especially the Bonklers team looks like a bunch of idiots but I say they actually pretty smart, but just not focused enough. Tomo is a prime example for that.

Hei Ralen, how about translating the "Sen to Man" manga? It's about this girl who lives with her father, very cute stuff. 6th grader Shima lives with her middle-aged father, Chihiro. Shima is constantly either annoyed by what her father says, while Chihiro tries to figure out the fickle nature of a young girl. Even though there are many cases where they disagree with each other, in the end, they find each other to be tolerable. 2 volumes, by the same guy who did "I want to be your dog".

Just to keep you guys in the loop, at the end of this month, inspired in large part by our friend Ragathol's trip a couple of years ago, I'll be travelling to Japan for an extended period. I'll be staying for three months (because that's the maximum amount of time my employer would allow me to be gone), October through December, to attend a Japanese language course in Yokohama.
I'll still have internet access and should be able to post here, but being away from my home computer and resources like Share, etc. there's a good chance this may impact my ability to post translations during that time.
I was originally worried about whether I would still be able to translate Yotsuba while I was gone, but with no new chapters in the past 10 months, it was beginning to look like it wouldn't be an problem after all. But now that it seems Azuma's started things back up again, it may be an issue.
There's also a very small chance my plane may crash into the Pacific Ocean, which would be a more difficult challenge to overcome.
anyone know which chapter has that sequence where yots is trying to bring a cup of coffee home or something like that and she trips walking in the door and falls flat on her face and spills the coffee (or whatever)

This is something I've always been really curious about, because so much of Azumanga feels like Alice in Wonderland.
The most notable thing is that Osaka is EXTREMELY similar to Alice. Because her inner monologues aren't inside the movie, it's harder to realize but in the books, Alice has a mind that wanders in really odd ways. Here's some excerpts that seem very similar to how Osaka would act.

"'Curiouser and curiouser!' cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English); 'now I'm opening out like the largest telescope that ever was! And there's a ton more like this in both books! There's also the whole dreaming of a bizarre mystical land repeatedly. Also, the Father Cat is very much like one of the wonderland creatures: speaking in incomprehensible riddles, making random nonsensical claims, having sudden shifts in moods for seemingly no reason.
Sorry to do this big text dump just Lewis Caroll is my favorite author and it really does feel like parts of Azumanga used it as inspiration
